Be sure to stop by, if you haven't already!
March and April are jam-packed with several events. I want to encourage you to circle March 7th (Kindergarten Open House) and April 11th (STEAM Night) on your calendars. More details are below.

Teacher Placement for Next School Year
We will begin making decisions about student/teacher placements for next school year very soon. Our goal is for each student to be placed in a classroom where their academic and emotional needs are met. Current classroom teachers provide pertinent information regarding each student in their classrooms. Counselors and learning specialists provide additional feedback, as well. Using all of the data that is gathered, teachers and administrators make the decisions regarding class assignment for each child. Classroom placement is very important and we want to consider all relevant information so that each Fairview student will be successful as they advance to their next grade level.
We welcome parent feedback before this process begins in the form of a letter. If you feel compelled to weigh-in, please send an email to Dr. Simmons by Monday, April 1st. Please limit your letter to the traits/qualities/characteristics of a potential teacher for your child. Additionally, if you have insight regarding your child’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style that could help us with our placement decision, feel free to include that information in your letter, as well. All feedback that you provide us will be considered carefully by our team.
Finally, please refrain from using a given teacher's name in your letter. Requests for a specific teacher, by name, will not be considered.
Thank you!

Update from Fairview Specials Classrooms
Hello Fairview Families!
With all grade levels we’ve re-introduced some jumping and balancing skills. We set up stations in the gym to test their abilities! With the nice weather we’ve also been getting
outside—moving on the track, taking walks and working thru stations with various skills. Ask your kids what we’ve been up to!
Climbing wall update—it’s in Columbia! It will be delivered and installed over spring break.
I’m so excited!!!! Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.
Please check the A,B,C,D schedule and continue wearing tennis shoes. This has been a huge problem with some kiddos. There are some instances where kids can’t participate if they don’t have tennis shoes. If you need assistance with tennis shoes or have questions please let me know.
Enjoy the weather!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
From the Art Room:
In art class students have been working hard on finishing up their clay projects. This unit is usually a favorite for the students and me! Some students are still working on glazing their clay projects but if they have finished glazing their work is coming home! I always wrap their work in newspaper and stress that it can still break, so I hope the projects make it home safely. Next year I am thinking of investing in some bubble wrap- so I will continuously be collecting bubble wrap if you have any! Please reach out with any questions lrobb@cpsk12.org

From the Media Center
Thanks for supporting our Book Fairs this year! It is wonderful to see students and families at these fun events and to see everyone find books that they will love. In the library, we have continued to introduce books, new ones and old favorites, to students so that they can be exposed to a wide variety of genres, topics, styles, etc. We want students to find JOY in reading so having a wide variety available and allowing choice can help students with this. We have highlighted books about dogs and cats, novels in verse, biographies, interactive books, and more. Students in upper grades have had practice finding books on the shelves based on call number to lead to independently locating books in any library.

Technology Specials
We have been having fun in Technology this month. Grades 2 through 5 started the month off by doing research using our Electronic Library data bases. Pebble Go, World Book Kids, Brain Pop and Kiddle are great kid safe resources for them. They took their research notes and put it into a slide presentation. It’s always fun to see how their presentations come together and how the children catch onto the apps and programs they use. 4th and 5th graders are also learning about how to make good choices when on their device such as limiting screen time and using appropriate sights for them. 2nd and 3rd graders then took a poll with fellow classmates and used the data they collected to make graphs in the Numbers app.
Kindergarten and first graders used the Clips app to make videos about some of their favorite things, then we moved onto the Garage Band app where they learned about the different musical instrument sounds, put them together to make a beat and used voice recording. I am looking forward to the exciting new things we will learn in March!

From the Music Room
February has been full of singing, dancing, and playing instruments in music. Most classes have spent time learning about black musicians for Black History Month, singing and playing Valentine’s Day songs, and celebrating the Chiefs' big Super Bowl win with some rhythm compositions using the song “Red Kingdom.” March is Music in Our Schools month, so we are planning some fun ways to celebrate! We are saying goodbye to our awesome student teacher, Ms. Frankenbach. She has done a great job and will be missed. Our new student teacher, Ms. Wisbey, will be joining our Fairview family very soon. She is eager to begin working with our students!

Counselor News:
Here is what students will be learning in March in counselor classes:
Kindergarten: Diversity- we don’t have to agree with everyone, but we must be respectful
1st grade: Diversity- we don’t have to agree with everyone, but we must be respectful
2nd grade: Diversity- being curious vs. judgmental
3rd grade: Diversity- being curious vs. judgmental
4th grade: Test taking, Diversity
5th grade: Test taking, Self-Worth
As we talk to students about test taking, one of the things we mention is getting enough rest at night. Getting enough sleep is really important for learning! Kids who are tired have a harder time staying focused, controlling emotions, and learning in general. How much sleep someone needs depends on their age. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has made the following recommendations for children and adolescents:
Age Group Recommended Hours of Sleep Per Day
6–12 years 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours
13–18 years 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours
Electronic devices and technology usage contribute to poor sleep. You can reduce the negative effects of screen time on your child’s sleep by:
-Avoiding screen time/technology use in the hour before bedtime
-Turning off devices that emit blue light—blue light interrupts natural sleep rhythms
-Encouraging your child to replace daytime screen time with physical activity
-NOT allowing phones and other devices in your child’s room overnight
-Modeling the technology habits you want your kiddos to develop
As always, if there are ways our counseling team can support your student or family, please let us know!
