FAMILY ACTIVITY
For our third quarter family activity, your family will be encouraged to create a flower when you come for conferences. On the flower, each family will show how they have incorporated one of the 7 habits into their family time. The flowers will be displayed next to our family mission statement tree in the Multi-Purpose Room as we work to demonstrate how we are "Growing Leaders" at Brougham. Please stop by one of the wet areas at the end of your conference time to complete a flower with your family’s activity. Feel free to bring a picture of your family participating in one of these activities. You can also choose to just write about your activity. Below are some examples of activities that you could highlight:
Be Proactive:
- Watch a movie, have a family meeting, have a family game night
Begin with the End in Mind:
- Enjoy a family mealtime, go somewhere as a family, set goals together as a family
Put First Things First:
- Read a book together, have one-on-one time with a family member, help your child with homework, cleaning up an area before playing
Think Win-Win:
- Play a board game, Send a card to a family member, Make a list of things you are thankful for
Seeks First to Understand, Then be Understood:
-Take turns giving compliments to each other
Synergize:
- Make a meal together as a family, make a lemonade stand, focus on using your manners, plan a family vacation
Sharpen the Saw:
- Serve together, identify three strengths of each family member, play outside

Counselor's Corner
Greetings All!
It is hard to believe we are already at the end of January and heading into February, but here we are. We are wrapping up our focus on Habit #4-Think Win-Win. We have learned that this means:
· We can problem-solve when we have an issue arise with another person (it doesn’t just have to be “I’m right, you’re wrong.”)
· think of what other people are feeling/wanting and not just about ourselves
· balancing courage and consideration
· work on having an abundance mentality
The question of “win-win” often turns to the obvious point, but what if your team doesn’t get the most points? Doesn’t that mean someone loses? Of course. You/your team might lose a game. But how you approach winning and losing is up to you. We have learned about our circle of influence, or what we can and cannot control.
During my counselor lessons and work with students, we talk a lot about Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset. It seems like a simple thing, but really it is so important. When we have a fixed mindset, we have what some might call “rock brain.” We are stuck in a mindset, perspective, or attitude of “I can’t do it.” “I will never understand this.” “This is just too hard.” If we stay here, we are right. Just like thinking win-win has a lot to do with how we approach a situation, so does this. We cannot control what is happening around us but we CAN choose to control how we respond to it. When we adjust our attitude, we can move from “I can’t do it” to “I can’t do it YET.” This seemingly small adjustment helps us change in a big way. It leaves the door open for hope and possibility!
Growth mindset looks like:
· embracing challenges
· learning from feedback
· becoming inspired by the success of others
Encouraging Growth Mindset in our kids looks like:
· Talking about it! Did you make a mistake today? What did you learn? What did you do that was difficult today?
· Encouraging failure. Say what?! Your child needs to know failure can/does happen and it is OK! Each time they fail and try again, their brains are growing stronger and they are learning how to persevere! Resilience and grit are priceless qualities for lifelong success!
· Praise the process! Instead of saying, “You’re so smart!” Praise effort, goal-setting, persistence through challenges, and being creative. “Wow! You must have worked hard on this!”
· Help them change their dialogue. The way they talk to themselves has a big impact on their mindset. If they say, “This is too hard!” Try encouraging them to instead say “I can’t do this yet, but I will keep trying!”
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like any more resources on this!
Warmly,
Faith Scott
Please join us on Saturday, MARCH 2nd from 4:00-7:30pm!!!
