Principal's Message
The Importance of Summer Reading
Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. Try these strategies to help your reader improve her reading during the summer.
Six Books for Summer - Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right — not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child's age, interests, and abilities. Libraries often run summer reading programs that motivate kids to read, so find out what's available in your area.
Read something every day - Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Reading signs while in the car, cereal boxes, menus and more. Kids love a challenge. Make it a game to add fun to reading.
Keep reading aloud - Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so she will build listening comprehension skills with grade-level and above books. This will increase knowledge and expand experience with text, so children will do better when they read on their own.
Hilton has lots of opportunities and resources available for parents. Click the bar below to see our summer reading guide.
Have a great weekend!
PTO News
Hello Hilton families,
I wanted to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who helped throw together a very successful Comedy Night & Silent Auction in less than 40 days! We are still waiting on our final number, but it looks like we raised close to $13,000! I am so proud to call this wonderful community my home. So many families and businesses came together to make it a successful event!
Last week we had an amazing Staff Appreciation Week! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, sent in items or helped out. We have an amazing staff at Hilton and we loved showing them how much we care!
Planning for next year is well under way. As a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) we would LOVE input from both parents and teachers. The best way to do this is to come to a PTO meeting. They are short and sweet :) Our last meeting is May 22 @ 7pm. We will be doing more planning for next year and will (hopefully) be finalizing the calendar.
Lastly, tonight is our Popsicle Playground and BOGO Book Fair! Come play and hang at the playground with fellow Hilton families. This is a great time to exchange numbers for summer playdates and to pick up summer reads at a wonderful price :)
Have a great weekend!
-Lauren Coffman

PTO Meeting
The next and last PTO meeting will be held on May 22nd at 7:00pm. The meeting will take place in Library. Please join us to offer your support and ideas. This will be the last PTO meeting this school year!
We will be taking the summer off so this meeting will be very important to get a head start on next year. We will also be (hopefully) finalizing the calendar. We would love input from our parents & teachers!
Popcorn Friday
The Last Popcorn Friday for the year will be on May 24. For $0.25 (or a Toe Token) your child(ren) can purchase popcorn popped by Hilton’s parents during lunchtime. To volunteer, just visit https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/login.a5w.
Open chair positions
We have a number of open chair positions available for next year! There’s a position for every lifestyle!
Still have a little one at home but want to contribute? Consider Service Project Chair- helps with Angel Tree supplies and volunteer sign up, plans and executes yearly service projects like a food or hygiene drive. Typically won’t need to be at school for long periods, just to coordinate and do pick up and drop off of items.
Love planning larger fun events? We need someone to run our Hound Dog Run and Our Fall Family Festival! Both would be best for a team of 2 people to take on.
Looking to try a smaller position and enjoy event planning? How about Movie Night chairperson. There are 2 movie nights per year-these are quick easy nights to plan!
Not much time, but could make some phone calls? Activity Night Planner is for you! This person contacts local businesses like Skyzone and Rollerama to schedule exclusive Hilton Family nights.
We are also looking for a few parents who love landscaping/gardening to help with our gardens and outdoor classroom.
And much more! Our PTO does so many amazing things! If you’re interested in one of these or another position, please email hiltonpto@gmail.com for more info!
MySchoolAnywhere
Hilton PTO will be going paperless. For the 2019/2020 school year, MySchoolAnywhere.com (MSA) will be the only source of contact to sign up for events. If you have not done so already, please go to www.MySchoolAnywhere.com and create an account. The invitation code is “hiltonexplores”. You can also download the free MySchoolAnywhere app. This website hosts many features including the school directory, event forms, event registration, event planning and sign ups, and paypal access. If you have any questions please contact the Hilton PTO at hiltonpto@gmail.com

Artsonia Online Art Gallery
Everyone should have received an email to approve access to Artsonia. The artwork created by our students will be now uploaded to this new online art gallery. You will be able to view your child(ren)’s art online, share with others, create a fan club and order keepsakes. Volunteers are still in the process of uploading artwork to this new system. So please keep checking back. If you have not received an email for approval or have any questions, please contact your PTO at HiltonPTO@gmail.com.
Hilton Recycling Program
Hilton receives money for recycled paper! There is a green dumpster outside the school located next to Hilton Road. Every Friday, Ms. Michael’s class collects recycled paper throughout the school and places it in the dumpster. You can donate also! But only paper please (no cardboard or phone books). It is an easy way for our school to earn money while teaching students how to protect the environment!
Kroger Shoppers
Hilton is now enrolled in the Kroger Rewards Program. Please support the school by linking Hilton Elementary to your Kroger Rewards Card. Hilton’s number is 68151 or you can just type the school’s name in the search window at https://www.kroger.com/communityrewards.
Amazon Smile
How fun would it be to shop, while at the same time, earning money for our school? Amazon Smile (https://smile.amazon.com) is through Amazon.com, in which they donate money for most items purchased through their website. The fun part is that the website keeps a running total on your account to see how much money you donate to
the school just by shopping with them. Check out this 30 second video to see how you can add a shortcut to your (mobile) home screen to ensure all your Amazon purchases benefit Hilton Elementary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgglu7ZCDE.
Coca Cola/Powerade Give
Attention all Coca Cola and Powerade drinkers! Another way to earn money for Hilton Elementary is through the Coca Cola Give Program. By collecting Coca Cola caps and and codes, Hilton can earn money to purchase supplies for physical education, sports, technology and/or arts. Most Coca-Cola beverages that have a product code under its cap, or printed on its paper packaging, are eligible to be used for donation. Here is a link to the reference list of participating brands https://us.coca-cola.com/participating-brands. Please collect these clean items in a plastic bag and send to school with your child. There is a drawer in the office for collections.
Background Check
If you are planning to volunteer at school at all this year, BAS requires a background check. Here is the link to complete this step: http://www.applitrack.com/brightonk12/StartForm.aspx?id=3993825.
Hilton Elementary PTO Mission Statement
We as parents wish to support the entire teaching staff and administration to make sure each and every child at Hilton Elementary School has a variety of learning opportunities and experiences.
Summer Lunch Bunch Information
Most community residents are within 15 minutes of a Summer Lunch Bunch site.
Our program design is simple:
Sharing a meal, enjoying a program and filling the pantry.
How do we share a meal?
Our sit-down meal can be provided through a variety of vendors and delivered on site. Volunteers set up and serve the meal, sack lunch style, to our guest families. Meals meet USDA nutritional guidelines and must be eaten "congregate". In other words, we sit down and share this meal together. This also allows us to build community with our guests, getting to know them, their families and their unique needs.
What types of programs are offered?
Summer Lunch Bunch means free family fun! Each meal service is followed by programming that we invite our guests (particularly the children) to participate in. We invite the community at large to bring in educational, entertaining and enriching programs to make the summer something special. Past programming provided has included: The Howell Nature Center Spirit of Alexandria Nature Bus, MSU Extension Food and Nutrition Educator, Local Libraries, Local Fire Departments, Petting Zoos, crafts, games, and themes. Programming runs 45 minutes to 1 hour following the meal service.
What does filling the Pantry mean?
Summer Lunch Bunch meets once a week. We know that this means 7 days until we see our friends again. To ensure that these families have extra food in their pantries until we see them again, each participant gets a "Pantry Pack" of food to take home while supplies last. Pantry Packs are filled with boxed and canned, shelf-stable groceries that can help the families build a menu of lunches for the upcoming week. In addition to the shelf-stable components of the Pantry Pack, fresh fruits and vegetables are introduced into Pantry Packs as funds and donations allow.
This year we will be running the Summer Lunch Bunch from June 17th, 2019 until August 16th, 2019.
We will be at multiple locations in Livingston County. You can find us at the Howell Library, Fowlerville Library, Hartland Meadows Mobile Home Park, Howell Estates Mobile Home Park, Challenger Elementary School, Munn Early Childhood Center and 2|42 Church.
