Social Studies and Science
In science, we have started our "Organisms and Their Environment" unit. First, we learned that all living things can be classified as either plants or animals. Plants can be classified by flowering and non-flowering plants. We have just learned about invertebrates, or animals without backbones, such as jellyfish, worms, insects, crabs, and shrimp. Animals with backbones are called vertebrates and can be broken into five classifications: mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles. We will have a quiz reviewing vertebrates and invertebrates on Friday. Your child should look over his/her notebook pages.
ELA & Math
In word study this week, we continue learning suffixes and determining the meaning of the new word when a suffix is added to a base word.
We are just finishing up a cold opinion writing prompt, or one that I give with no explanation or help. From there, I determine specifically what the main focus needs to be when teaching content, organization, voice and conventions in essay writing. Students will learn how to determine which kind of type of essay to write based on the prompt (opinion, narrative, persuasive, or informative).
We finished our chapter on long division and with a lot of practice and perseverence, students did quite well. We just started chapter 7 with numeric and non-numeric patterns.
