From the Student Support Counselor
Parents,
Spartans have been showing their school spirit this week and pledging to live high naturally through the fun of dress up theme days. It has been a blast seeing all the students in their attire! I would love to see their pictures (@CHS911Counselor).
Last week, I concentrated mainly on marijuana use due to the rise in its use by teens. One of the biggest epidemics here in the United States is the addiction to Opioids. This is where we concentrate this week. Opioids are found in prescription painkillers, such as OxyContin and Vicodin (most of us will receive the generic Hydrocodone) and are derived from opium in poppy plants. They also belong in the same class of drugs as Heroin. In the brain and body, Opioids are designed to relieve pain and are often prescribed following surgery or major injury. When Opioids are abused, there can be serious health risks, including addiction and overdose.
Did you know?
● The U.S. has 4.6% of the world’s population, but we use 80% of the world’s Opioids.
● 83% of the world’s population has no access to any Opioids-think about that. 83% of the world’s population receives some other form of pain management.
● Drug distribution through the pharmaceutical supply chain was the equivalent of 96 mg of morphine per person in 1997 and approximately 640 mg per person in 2015, an increase of >500%. That is the equivalent of 128 Vicodin tablets!
● Opioids consist of 80% morphine and 15% codeine, which are both highly addictive substances that stimulate dopamine-our body’s primary reward system, as well as Opioid receptors.
● Addiction chances increase with everyday a person is on prescription painkillers. Duration of acute use:
○ 1 day - 6% chance of still using that drug a year later.
○ 8 days - 13.5% chance of still using that drug a year later.
○ 31 days - 29.9% chance of still using that drug a year later
● Opioids can increase motivation and confidence, while decreasing pain, depression, and anxiety.
● Research has shown there is a definitive link to the amount of prescription painkillers being prescribed and the number of deaths caused by overdoses on Opioid drugs, and both are on the rise.
● Teens who received a prescription for Opioid pain medication by Grade 12 were at 33 percent increased risk of misusing an Opioid between ages 19 and 25.
● Among those with low predicted risk of future Opioid use in 12th grade, having an Opioid prescription increased their risk of post-high-school Opioid misuse three-fold.
● Research shows that treatment of acute pain, such as following a surgical procedure, with a combination of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen is 3 times more effective at relieving pain than a prescription drug such as OxyContin.
● The 3 drugs most often mentioned in emergency room visits related to drug use are cocaine, marijuana, and prescription drugs.
● 52% of drug overdose deaths in the U.S. are related to prescription drugs.
● Opioids distort thinking, perception, judgment, distort coordination, alter the brain’s wiring for pleasurable experiences, slow breathing and heart rate, and can lead to death.
● Vicodin and OxyContin are particularly dangerous when taken in combination with alcohol.
● The brain changes that Opioids can cause are permanent and not reversible.
● The safest treatment for Opioid addiction is synthetic forms of Opioids like Methadone.
Parents, please lock up your prescriptions. These facts and statistics are highly alarming. Taking painkillers while not under the care of a physician is incredibly dangerous. If your child is susceptible to this drug, one use can trigger a need for further doses, and may eventually lead to addiction. Visit www.lockyourmeds.org/ for more information on keeping your prescriptions safe.
As always, I am just a phone call or e-mail away. Reach out with concerns or questions.
