Moving to Hybrid Learning Model
Earlier this month, FCPS shared an updated plan for the implementation of a hybrid learning model for students. Currently, we will be moving forward with that plan. This means school-based staff will be returning to buildings on Wednesday, January 27. Students are expected to return as part of an in-person hybrid model on Tuesday, February 16. To provide time for our instructional teams to transition to the hybrid model, Wednesday, February 3, and Wednesday, February 10, will be asynchronous learning days. While small group instruction will not be scheduled from January 27 to February 12, schools will be scheduling strategic orientation sessions for specific grade levels and programs.
We have been preparing for the hybrid model for a long time, and we look forward to welcoming students back to our schools. We are confident in our hybrid model, which follows all guidance from the Frederick County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The mitigation strategies that we are implementing: facial coverings, social distancing, and frequent hand washing continue to be successful in limiting the spread of COVID-19. It is critically important that all staff and students adhere to these protocols.
We are excited to move to this next step in returning students to our school buildings!
When FCPS transitions to the hybrid model, we will move to the hybrid schedule (sample linked here) with students assigned to a hybrid or virtual cohort based on the intention forms previously completed. The schedule provided is a sample schedule; each grade level schedule varies based on specials, lunch, and recess. You will receive a schedule specific to your child’s grade level and cohort prior to the change.
In order to meet the unique needs of an elementary virtual program and an elementary hybrid program, some teacher assignments may change. As a result, some students may be assigned to a different teacher when we transition to hybrid. Our teachers are committed to building strong classroom communities, and attending to the social-emotional needs of all students is a top priority. This is important for all students; those returning to the building for hybrid, those starting with a different teacher, and those who are continuing virtually with some new classmates. Communication about teacher assignments, cohort assignments, and grade-level schedules will be shared at least two weeks prior to the start of the hybrid model.
School Enrollment
Inclement Weather
In the event of inclement weather, students will continue to engage in virtual instruction using the schedule that is currently in effect -- the schedule for all virtual or the schedule for the hybrid model.
An announcement cancelling small group instruction will be made by 5 a.m. on inclement weather days, and those students will also participate in virtual learning for the day.
If the weather event is significant enough to warrant closing FCPS offices, then an announcement will be made that the entire system is closed and NO virtual instruction will occur. This will be considered a "snow day" and the day will be made up as outlined in the FCPS Calendar Handbook.
For more information, please refer to FCPS Regulation 400-02: Closing of School due to Weather, Maintenance or Other Reasons.
Coronavirus Dashboard
FCPS has added a link on the school system's web homepage to the Maryland Department of Health's Coronavirus Dashboard. The dashboard features a Schools Data tab that serves as a resource for anyone who wants information about COVID outbreaks in school buildings.
Schools are listed as having an outbreak when the following occur:
*At least two confirmed COVID-19 cases among students/teachers/staff within a 14-day period, epidemiologically linked outside of household contacts; or
*Three or more classrooms or cohorts with cases from separate households that meet the classroom/cohort outbreak definition, occurring within 14 days; or
*Five percent or more unrelated students/teachers/staff with confirmed COVID-19 within a 14-day period (minimum of 10 unrelated students/teachers/staff).
FCPS also continues to link to the dashboard at www.fcps.org/update.
