Environmental Science Programs in STEAM
In partnership with the City of Carlsbad and BCK Programs, Environmental Education consultants, La Costa Meadows students have participated in two environmental science units focused on watershed protection. Through the STEAM rotation, 1st & 2nd grade students conducted a litter study around campus and explored the impacts of litter in our waterways. They collected litter, placed it in a jar of water, then logged their observations of the changes the following week. Through read aloud books, they collected and charted litter data and they also carried out a science experiment to see how litter impacts water. Finally, 1st & 2nd grade students wrote "Dear Litterbug" letters to inspire the greater school community to keep our waterways litter-free. The letters are displayed outside the principal's office window and in the LCM front office.
Fifth graders participated in a program called SWPPP Internship, focused on Storm Water Pollution Prevention and modeled after actual water quality standards in our community. They learned how to delineate a watershed, where watershed LCM is located on campus, and common pollutants in urban runoff that are generated at the school. They explored the impact of common stormwater pollutants through a "Batiquitos Lagoon Pollution Clean-up" simulation where they selected different materials (strainers, filters, cotton balls) and attempted to remove pollutants from a water sample using those materials. They conducted scientific testing of pH, turbidity and phosphates on stormwater samples collected from throughout the school campus, and will communicate pollution prevention messaging to the school community through informational signs that will be placed around the school campus. The signs are focused on the biofiltration basin next to the school garden - how it works, facts about stormwater pollution, and what we can all do to help. The students' ideas will inspire a permanent sign to be installed near the basin.
