What is McKeel Academy of Technology's Middle School A Team?
WHO?
One team of six students and a coach is selected from each grade level to represent the middle school in this tournament. We at MAT have a Seventh and Eighth Grade Team.
WHAT?
The tournament is an academic, quiz-bowl type competition. This is not a quick response, trivial pursuit contest. Instead, it is a slower-paced tournament in which players are asked questions from the areas of mathematics, science, language arts social studies, and economics. The questions are written by educators from district schools to mirror existing curricula. We practice every Monday; seventh grade team practices on the ODD Mondays, and the eighth grade team practices on the EVEN Mondays from 2:15 until 3:30. Some practices will be held for longer periods and we will have competitions between the teams twice a year.
WHERE and WHEN?
The Lakeland Center will host the 2015 Semifinal Round on Tuesday, March 24. The County Championship on Wednesday, March 25th, at Polk State College in Winter Haven, will feature the six school teams from the Semifinal Round with the highest scores. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. There is no charge for admission. We practice in Miss Hurt's room, room 6-112 (the classroom behind the Media Center).
WHY?
Our goal is to provide an arena of competition in which middle students are challenged to display their knowledge of the core subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies along with their knowledge of basic economic terms and concepts. It is great fun, tests your knowledge and in addition, it prepares you for the High School A Team.
HOW?
Polk County's Middle School Academic Team Tournament is sponsored by the School Board of Polk County and The City of Lakeland. Competition is late Match early April at the Lakeland Center.
