Santan Quarterly Report
September 2016/2nd Quarter
Letter from the "Editor" ... Mrs. Kowalinski
Dear Santan Junior High Families:
Welcome to cooler weather! This is our favorite time at Santan Junior, the cooler mornings and “not so hot” lunch times for our students. More and more students are sitting outside. Water is still very important, so please continue to send water bottles for your children. The kids slowly start moving from inside the cafeteria to outside and cooler weather. You just can’t beat Arizona in the fall!
The teachers are busy planning lots of wonderful learning projects for their students. Speaking of teachers, aren’t they all wonderful? Show your support to that one special teacher by having your child nominate him/her for the Silver Apple Award sponsored by Channel 3’s, Arizona’s Family. It is easy to do: Students nominate by logging onto: azfamily.com/silverapple
In 100 words or less, students are invited to write, “why their teacher is special”. It must be signed by the principal, so when it is finished, I am happy to sign. Just bring it on down!
A special thank you for all the families that supported our Booster’s Check-a-thon to help us purchase shade sails for our amphitheater area. It is a COOL way to help us out! As 2nd quarter draws us closer to the holidays, please don’t forget our Booster’s fundraising programs. The Harkins Movie Gift Cards end up being everyone’s favorite! When you buy a $25 dollar gift card, you get a free large popcorn to share with your family. Look for information in the early part of November coming home from the Boosters.
Thanks for being such a wonderful community to work with and for all the support you continue to show your kids and our staff. On behalf of our administrators and our staff, enjoy the wonderful fall climate and 2nd quarter!
Educationally yours,
Barbara J. Kowalinski

SJHS TEACHER RECEIVES 2016 ECONOMIC EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR!
Pictured above is SJHS's very own Rhea Steyer - CATS Language Arts Teacher
The Arizona Council on Economic Education is pleased to announce that Rhea Steyer has been selected as the 2016 Economic Education Teacher of the Year! She was selected because of her on-going commitment to economic and financial education through her own professional development, demonstration of her students' accomplishments at ACEE hosted competitions and sharing best practices with peers.
We are so proud of your accomplishments Rhea! (And especially proud you are a Stormer now!)
CONGRATULATIONS TO MRS. WINZELER, MRS. STANLEY & MRS. JEFFERS
SJHS MATH TEACHERS - ACHIEVE AWARD WINNERS!
Last May Megan Jeffers, Melissa Stanley, and Sarah Winzeler from Santan Junior High were selected to be part of a Writing Jam in Washington DC through the Achieve organization. Chosen out of many applicants across the nation, their goal was to write an Algebra 1 unit on functions, as there were no lessons rated exemplary available addressing these standards. After writing and revising their lesson throughout the summer, the lesson was submitted to Achieve and evaluated using the EQuIP rubric. This month Megan, Melissa, and Sarah were informed that their lesson was selected as exemplary. The lesson will be published and available online as an open education resource for Algebra 1 Teachers to use with their students. Congratulations Stormers!
Important information about SJHS Finals
- Comprehensive finals will be given at the end of each semester
- Finals will be averaged into the students' grades at the semester with a 10% weight

ZAP FIELD DAY AND WATER DAYS
ZAP – Zeros Aren’t Productive is our effort to encourage students to work hard, eliminate zeros from the grade book and keep up their grades. We will run two ZAP days this year. Our first ZAP Day is scheduled for Friday, December 9th. Students will be rewarded for their hard work and effort by playing games on our fields. Our second ZAP Day will be our water day complete with water slides and snow-cones in May. Teachers have remarked that there is a noticeable difference in less zeros than years past with the implementation of our ZAP days. We are excited to offer a celebratory experience for students each semester for their awesomeness!

BEING IN THE "KNOW" ABOUT SEXTING
This month, please take some time to review an on-going problem that our nation is facing. Although at Santan, we have very few encounters in the following arena, it is important that we keep our parents informed.
Throughout the country, as well as within the school district, there has been a not-so-new trend occurring, which is known as “Sexting”. It is likely that your child has a cellular telephone and with that comes responsibility. Unfortunately children have and are misusing their cellular telephones by taking photo/video images of themselves nude and forwarding them to friends. Please take a moment to educate your children. Besides the personal problems that would occur, there is also a law that is being broken. To date, it is a FELONY to be in possession of these photographs/videos, it is also a FELONY for minors to take nude photographs/videos of themselves. Both of which can lead to an arrest. Education is key. If your child or someone you know happens to be the recipient of a nude photograph/video of a minor, report it to the local police department immediately. Do NOT send, reply to, or delete the text, close your phone and wait for police response.
Santan’s Student Resource Officer (SRO) Fernando Gomez will be presenting a power-point presentation to our 7th and 8th graders during the school year. The presentation is tastefully done and will help keep our students safe and in the right mind for making good decisions.
Below, please find a list of the laws that govern “sexting” in order to keep you informed. It is our mission at Santan to help your child be informed decision makers. Together, we can make a difference for all of our students.
13-3506. Furnishing harmful items to minors; applicability; classification
A. It is unlawful for any person, with knowledge of the character of the item involved, to recklessly furnish, present, provide, make available, give, lend, show, advertise or distribute to minors any item that is harmful to minors.
B. This section does not apply to the transmission or sending of items over the internet.
C. A violation of this section is a class 4 felony.
13-3559. Reporting suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor; immunity
A. Any communication service provider, remote computing service, system administrator, computer repair technician or other person who discovers suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor on a computer, computer system or network or in any other storage medium may report that discovery to a law enforcement officer.
B. A person who on discovery in good faith reports the discovery of suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor is immune from civil liability.
C. It is an affirmative defense to a prosecution for a violation of section 13-3553 that on discovery a person in good faith reports the discovery of unsolicited suspected visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of a minor.
13-3553. Sexual exploitation of a minor; evidence; classification
A. A person commits sexual exploitation of a minor by knowingly:
1. Recording, filming, photographing, developing or duplicating any visual depiction in which a minor is engaged in exploitive exhibition or other sexual conduct.
2. Distributing, transporting, exhibiting, receiving, selling, purchasing, electronically transmitting, possessing or exchanging any visual depiction in which a minor is engaged in exploitive exhibition or other sexual conduct.
B. If any visual depiction of sexual exploitation of a minor is admitted into evidence, the court shall seal that evidence at the conclusion of any grand jury proceeding, hearing or trial.
C. Sexual exploitation of a minor is a class 2 felony and if the minor is under fifteen years of age it is punishable pursuant to section 13-705.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Counselor Quick Tips-
“Expect the Best From your Child…and Get it!”
When researchers look at what makes students successful, they always find that expectations play a key role. If parents and teachers hold high expectations, children usually live up to them. That’s true in academics, athletics and for behavior as well. The good news for parents is that you can learn how to put the power of positive expectations to work for you. Here’s how:
Emphasize the Three “A’s”-Attendance, Achievement and Attitude.
Remember the Three “B’s” -Be Positive, Be Consistent and Be there for your child.
Expect Children to Develop Good Habits
A habit is an automatic action that takes no conscious thought. Habits help most of us get through the day. When we get up in the morning, we don’t stop to thing, “Maybe I should brush my teeth.” We just do it.
Parents can help children develop positive habits, too. Show that you expect your child to develop the habit of doing homework at a regular time, for example, or the habit of spending some time reading each day.
Talk with your child about other habits you expect him/her to develop. A few possibilities include:
· Writing down homework assignments.
· Remembering to bring needed material home from school.
· Remembering to take homework and other materials back to school.
· Going to bed on time.
· Getting up on time and being ready for school on time.
· Making his/her bed and straightening up his room in the morning.
Here are some ways you can encourage good habit formation: Don’t try everything at once, make sure your children are involved and allow 21 days to form new and healthy habits.

ATTENTION PARENTS!!

Each parent is encouraged to activate their account at the start of the school year to assure that they are well informed of student progress. All school sites have a parent portal manager, MaryAnn Rezzonico, rezzonico.maryann@cusd80.com, should you require set-up assistance or have further questions. Portal accounts will allow parents to check their child's academic progress at any time during the school year.
****Payment for ALL extracurricular activity fees will be done online via the "Parent Portal" in Infinite Campus so please be sure you are enrolled****
In order to utilize tax credit monies, the State of Arizona set forth a requirement that all school districts must charge a fee for enrolled students to participate in extracurricular activities. Primary guardians will need to continue to make payments through Infinite Campus so that the fees will link directly to their children and so they have a record of their payments. All other community members will be able to continue to utilize the third party online donation website. In addition to automating the fee collection process, both electronic fee payment systems help CUSD move towards becoming paperless.
Infinite Campus is currently the District’s best solution to automatically track extracurricular activity fees at an individual level. Moving to Infinite Campus provides parents with the convenience of making debit, credit or e-check payments and helps alleviate the work load for site administrative assistants and district staff since there is no longer a need to track fees manually for 28,000 students. Infinite Campus will significantly reduce employee overtime and allow employees to focus on other important tasks. While the third party donation website does allow designations to a student it will not link automatically to their account without a manual adjustment by staff. This is why parents are directed to Infinite Campus and all other community members use the third party donation system.
