A Message from Mrs. Caudill
Whether you’re new to Amerman or you’ve been here for a few years, the back-to-school season is the perfect time to get acquainted with The Leader In Me. Did you know…
- That every kid is a leader!?
- That each class is a team!?
- And each class team comes up with its own mission statement!?
- And children can learn how to set goals and track their own progress?
- And kids as young as kindergarten can “think win-win” and realize that synergy is the best way to get something done!?
It might sound like a professional development training designed for adults, but The Leader In Me brings these concepts to the elementary level and the effects are amazing.
I hope you take the time to read our Leader in Me focus for the month of September: Leader in Me 101.
Stay well,
Devon Caudill

SEPTEMBER FOCUS: LEADER IN ME 101
What is The Leader In Me?
The Leader In Me is a whole-school framework that empowers students with the skills they need to be happy, successful, thriving people in the 21st century. This holistic approach to education is not a program, it is a process. It is also not viewed as “something extra” or “one more thing on the to-do list.” Instead, it is woven into every aspect of the school experience through highly effective practices (more on the 7 Habits below!) and proven tools.
Fun Fact: Amerman Elementary earned the distinction of becoming a “Lighthouse School” in 2019. That means that Amerman, along with the other five NPS elementary schools, is certified by FranklinCovey to use the amazing framework of the Leader In Me.
Why is The Leader In Me important?
Study after study is showing that students need to develop 21st Century skills such as problem-solving, positive thinking, creativity/innovation, teamwork, empathy, accepting responsibility, etc. to succeed in school, in work, and in life. It used to be assumed that kids would just automatically pick up these skills along the way, or that some people are natural-born leaders and others aren’t. It turns out that these timeless and universal principles can help each and every kid, even as young as age 5. Schools that adopt The Leader In Me cite countless benefits, including reduced discipline problems, improved student responsibility, enhanced school culture, greater sense of community and belonging, and increased academic performance.
What are the 7 Habits?
At school, students learn the 7 highly effective habits through integrated instruction, direct lessons, and modeling at school. Here’s a snapshot of the 7 Habits:
Parents as Partners
A key paradigm (the way we see things) of The Leader In Me is that educators and families partner to develop the whole child. Hi! I’m Kate Rundell, and I’m here to help with that this year. I will be serving as the Parent Liaison and my (volunteer) role will be to share information and help strengthen the home-school connection. I will synergize with the Staff Lighthouse Team, the PTA, students and parents. I’m hoping to help more parents see the incredible value of The Leader In Me and realize those benefits at home too.
What To Do Next
- Be sure to check out the back of your student’s white envelope (which comes home from your teacher on Mondays or Friday). It lists the 7 Habits (and the bonus habit #8) and conversation starters to discuss at home.
- A handout about The Leader In Me is coming home with your student in early October. You might want to post it on the refrigerator as a visual or let your child put it up in their room.
- The Bobcat Boost – Coming in October – If you would like to recognize your child for using one of the 7 Habits at home, you can submit a Bobcat Boost to your child’s teacher. It will get saved in their leadership notebook and help reinforce the great job they did.
- Stay tuned to the Bobcat Broadcast for monthly installments on the 7 Habits and learn how to extend the benefits at home.

Northville Public Schools Close Contact Quarantine Protocol
NPS has aligned our Close Contact Protocol with the guidance provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) shown here in the School Quarantine Guidance graphic and supported by our local Health Department. This guidance provides multiple pathways for students to remain in school. For a more detailed explanation of this graphic, please see this NPS Close Contact Quarantine Protocol Explained document.
If your child is an identified Close Contact to a positive COVID case, we will contact you and further explain your options of, where possible, keeping your child safely in school.
COVID Safety and Mitigation Plans
As we come together in learning this year, it is important to remember to perform at-home self-monitoring using the COVID-19 Daily Student Symptom Screening Tool. This screener serves as a daily reminder that children who are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 (or ANY illness) need to stay home from school. This is an important measure that will help prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in using this screener each school day. In addition to the daily screener students and staff are required to wear masks while indoors.
The NPS 2021-22 COVID-19 General Mitigation Response Plan outlines the multiple layers of COVID-19 safety measures being implemented across the district to support the health and safety of all students and staff. School principals will share specific building procedures with families. Processes are in place at each school to teach and/or reinforce safety measures with all students. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document answers additional questions you may have as you and your child are preparing for the start of the 2021-22 school year.

TechGirlz Workshop - Attention 5th graders!!
This is Sahithy Prattipati. I am a sophomore from Northville High School and would like to introduce you all to the TechGirlz Python Programming Workshop this September 30, 6:30-8:30. TechGirlz is an incredible nonprofit organization that promotes girls to start learning more about the field of tech through these free workshops and camps. Regardless of if students are interested in pursuing technology in the future, interested in a different field, or still exploring different career paths, tech is a growing space on which we all should form at least a basic understanding. The free Python workshop welcomes all girls grades 5-8 to join in and learn the basics of the popular programming language!
Looking forward to introducing students to the Python language! Those interested, see the attached flyer or click on the link below to sign up:
