The TIGER Times
Yamhill Carlton High School
Week of February 11-16, 2019
Should we by chance have a snow day, I wanted to share some information so students are prepared and ready for the day they are coming back to. If we miss a B day and then come back the following day, it will be an A day. This keeps our overall schedule in place for field trips, guest speakers, etc. So basically, we miss the day that was a snow day and the schedule stays intact for the remainder of the school year. I hope this makes sense. If not, give us a call.

YC Prepping for Winter
In this post you will learn how:
YC prepares for and determines possible closures, and
What steps you should take to be prepared for possible closures
How YC prepares for and determines possible closures:Our district office routinely monitors weather activity on a daily basis, even more so during the fall and winter months where weather is the most unpredictable. We get our information from both local news stations as well as national weather sources. Moreover, both the transportation supervisor (of Mid Co) and the Superintendent make sure to drive the routes every day per weather is predicted, starting around 4 o'clock in the morning. They physically check all the routes and closely monitor the news for any alerts. If they find the roads hazardous in any way, they make the call and inform the public of the delay that can vary between an hour to an entire day, based on the findings. We take the safety of our children very serious. We understand making these calls can disrupt the routines of our families and staff, if made prematurely, but we find that being forthcoming with the safest option (based on the physical findings our staff obtains first thing every morning) is more important than anything else. Additionally, Mid Columbia Bus has their own weather service that sends them routine updates every day before they pick up our children. Safety is being the focal point at the start of every school day.
Nevertheless, we trust parents to make the ultimate call when it comes to their child’s safety. Not all streets are plowed at the same time, and snow totals may differ from region to region. If you do not think it is safe to send or take your kids to school during a weather incident, please keep them home. School officials will be understanding regarding tardiness and absences during inclement winter weather.
What steps should you take to be prepared for possible closures:YC often encourages our staff and parents to sign up for Flash Alert, which is an alert system that monitors road conditions/closures and emergency notifications around the region. If you have a mobile phone, be sure to follow the steps below to get instant notifications on these possible alerts:

February is a Great Month to Catch Up
Seniors: No matter what you have (or haven't) accomplished so far, there's still time to make a plan for next year:
- Several Oregon college are still accepting applications for admissions. Focus on community college applications as well.
- Meet the Early Bird Deadline of Feb. 15th for the OSAC Scholarship. The regular application deadline is March 1. (All completed applications submitted by Feb. 15 will be entered into a drawing to win one of several $1,000 Early Bird Scholarships)
- This month is also a great time to visit the campuses of colleges where you’ve applied (or will apply soon), and confirm your FAFSA information (or submit your FAFSA/ORSAA if you haven't yet done so).
- Oregon Promise Grant deadline is June 3rd for students graduating this spring.
MESA Scholarship to Eastern Oregon University Available
The Mathematics Education Scholarship Awards (MESA) is a major scholarship program designed to help bring capable, undergraduate students to EOU to pursue Bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and to be prepared for entry into the Masters of Teaching/Teacher Licensure program in our College of Education.
Scholarship awards will range from $2,000 to $4,000 per year and may be renewed annually until graduation. Each year up to 10 MESA scholarships will be awarded. To be eligible for the MESA scholarship, students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or above from their high school (or previous college). The following criteria will be used to rank eligible applicants:
- Essay describing why student is pursuing a teaching career
- Math teacher recommendation(s)
- Math coursework at prior school (high school and/or previous college)
- Membership in underrepresented population in mathematics teaching (gender, social economic status, ethnicity, rural background).
We have received some applications for the MESA scholarship and would like to receive more. The application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2019. Please encourage students in your high school to apply for this major scholarship. We would like nothing better than to award 10 scholarships this year and each year for the foreseeable future. More information about the MESA scholarship can be found on the MESA information website. On this website is also a link to our online application. If you have any questions about this new program, please do not hesitate to email me atjknudson@eou.edu.
