Resource Area for Teaching
Student STEM Opportunity
SRVUSD has partnered with Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) to provide a series of Engineering Challenges for your student. These STEM challenges are optional and are being offered to foster innovation, creative thinking, and problem solving skills. The first challenge, Build Your Dream Playground, offers fun and engaging hand-ons activities using common household materials. The Challenge Presentation starts with a short how-to video introducing the challenge, then has students scavenging for science (collecting household materials), creating a journal from recycled materials and moves onto designing and building a slide or series of progressively more complicated slides (think twists and turns). From there it's on to swing sets with additional activities added periodically. Videos and instructional supports are offered for each step.
To access the challenge, students click on the presentation link below. There they can navigate through the slides at their own pace (younger students will need support of course) and get to drawing and building. Students can spend as little or as long as they want on each activity and are encouraged to share their creations with family, and peers. Students are also encouraged to share their creations with Raft to be included in a student showcase. A new set of challenges will be introduced in January.
If you have any questions, concerns or want to know more, feel free to reach out to Raft directly at education@raft.net. Classroom teachers are not involved in these challenges.
Enjoy!
