Principal's Message
Dear LaSalle II Families-
I wanted to send a few reminders about points of contact in the school community. While I am happy to be available to parents, I am not always the most efficient point of contact due to other obligations throughout the school day. Please read below about where to direct questions or concerns.
- Your child’s classroom teacher is the first person you should contact, particularly with concerns in the classroom, academic questions, and day-to-day issues.
- Social emotional concerns can be directed to the school counselor, Ms. Sapieka, at nmsapieka@cps.edu. She generally collaborates with your child’s teacher as well to get a full picture of what’s happening.
- Special Education concerns can be directed to the case manager, Ms. Feeney, at alfeeney@cps.edu.
- Technology issues such as student log-ins should be directed to Ms. Aquino at nmaquino@cps.edu
- Aspen Parent Portal questions should be directed to the Assistant Principal, btmalinowski@cps.edu
- Registration, paperwork, fees, volunteer status and logistical concerns can be directed to Ms. Landgraf (jslandgraf@cps.edu or Ms. Ortiz (jaortiz224@cps.edu) in the main office.
Thank you!
Principal

Covid Testing Help Needed!
COVID Protocol Updates
Flip to Remote Clarification
When there is a known covid positive case, principals have the ability to flip classrooms to remote while following district guidance until the contact tracing team has completed the contact tracing process. Please note that in these instances, there is not school-wide notification that goes out immediately, rather only those individuals who have been temporarily identified as closet contacts are notified and informed to quarantine. Once the contact tracing team has completed their intake process, school-wide notification will be sent.
Also, it is important to note that in some instances, a class will be flipped to remote and then flipped back within a few days. This may happen in instances when there is a rapid COVID test that indicates a positive test result, but then the PCR test comes out negative.
Class Cleaning
When a student is sent to the Care Room because they are demonstrating COVID symptoms, the school has to temporarily move the classroom to an alternate location while the classroom is cleaned. You may hear your child talking about changes in classroom environments, but know that just because a child is sent to the Care Room, it does not mean that there is a COVID positive case in the classroom. The school will notify any family if a child has been identified as a close contact to a COVID positive case.
Siblings & Sick Student Protocols
If a student is sent to the care room and then sent home due to COVID symptoms, siblings will also be sent home until there is confirmation that the student does not have COVID or an alternative diagnosis received from a doctor.
Quarantine
Only unvaccinated, direct contacts to COVID positive cases will be notified to quarantine. Siblings of students under quarantine due to exposure to a COVID positive case are considered secondary contacts. Secondary contacts do not have to quarantine since they have not been directly exposed to COVID.
FAQ's Regarding Positive Covid Cases
What happens if my child is supposed to quarantine but they come to school?
Please avoid this scenario by checking your email and text messages. Schools have one care room and one care room attendant. Since your child was exposed to covid, they will have to sit in the care room until you are able to pick them up, putting them in a room with other students who may exhibit illnesses.
What happens if I hear that another family tested positive, but we have yet to hear anything from the school?
Please encourage everyone to report positive COVID cases to http://cps.edu/covidresults AND directly inform the school administration. Unfortunately, we cannot take action on cases that are not directly reported by the positive case.
Is there a delay between when a family notifies CPS and when LaSalle II may take action needed to quarantine families?
We will flip homerooms to remote as soon as we are notified of a positive case.
Will all students in the classroom be quarantined due to a positive case?
Since classrooms are considered congregate settings, all students will be quarantined until CPS completes their contact tracing. The only exception would be students who are vaccinated and not showing symptoms, or a student happened to be absent during the positive students contagious period.
How quickly will my child be provided remote work or simultaneous instruction, if they need to quarantine?
This will begin 24 business hours after notification in order to give the teacher time to prepare.
How long will this guidance be in place?
As of now, this process will be in place for the foreseeable future. In order to avoid having students in quarantine, please make sure to continue mitigation efforts outside of school.
Student Covid Testing
If you are interested in having your child participate in testing, please follow the link below and complete the registration process. A parent or guardian must register any minor under 18 years old, and you’ll give a one-time consent and HIPAA authorization to share your child’s results with the school and district.
Testing is optional for students, except for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated student athletes. Testing will take place during regular school hours and results will be available in 24 to 48 hours. Color Health will follow up with you directly if the pool in which your child participated has a positive result.

Hispanic Heritage Month in Room 202
We have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about a few different countries in Central America. We learned fun facts about those countries, looked at their flags and learned about famous people from those places. Then, we made this Collaborative Poster! Each student got a different page to color and we put it all together to make this masterpiece!
STEM in 4th Grade
Students in 4th grade started their science experience with a hands-on, minds-on STEM challenge. Students were given straws, a cup, a string, and some tape, and were tasked with the challenge of creating a tower for a bucket that could hold weight. The bucket had to be free-swinging and hang at least 2 inches from the bottom of the tower. Students drew out their own plan and then worked with a partner to combine their ideas and decide on a final design. During the building process, students discussed successes and problems with their initial designs and then found new ways to add additional supports and stability. After all of the towers were created, it was impressive to see so many buckets that could be completely filled to the brim with marbles without toppling over. These scientists are ready for a great year of teamwork and exploration!
