Stargirl the Different
By: Lauren Goldschmidt
Different
The word different can mean relatively anything, depending on who you ask. Some may say, a distinguishing feature. Others may just give an example. But if you ask me? I say that the best definition of different would be Stargirl. Even in the book, it plainly states "At the same time, we held back, because she was different. different." (pg 26) She shown through every split and sliver of Leo's life. Others say she radiates with weirdness, as she tenderly strokes both her ukelele, and her pet rat. They weren't used to anything outside of their comfort zone. But who said being different was a bad thing? I say show off who you are, and inspire everyone along the way!
A Tulip
"She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl." (pg 15) Stargirl was a tulip in a world of weeds. Her beauty was of a different sort, and she sparkles and shines through the squalid darkness of everyday life.
Selflessness
"All of her feelings, all of her attentions flowed outward." (pg 53) Stargirl was a caring person. She was unequivocally selfless, and would do virtually anything for those around her, there aren't many people you can say that about.
Change
"So, she would stop and point out that the front door of the house we were passing was blue and that the last time we had passed it, it had been green." (pg 108) Stargirl isn't the only thing that is different... This door is blue, how many blue doors do you see regularly? Not many..... This door definitely stands out!
Alien
"She was an alien." (pg 14) As plain as it is to state, aliens aren't normal. Technically their existence hasn't even been proved, and I think that's how the students at Mica High felt about Stargirl, like they weren't even sure if she was real.
