A Message from the Principal
Canal View Families,
Happy April! I hope you all had a wonderful spring break. I loved hearing students' stories about adventures, travels, and the solar eclipse! We certainly missed them over the break, but I'm glad that everyone was able to take some time off before we power through the remaining months of the school year.
This newsletter is filled with important information. Please read carefully and let your classroom teacher or me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for all you do to partner with us!
Warmly,
Denise Lemcke
Principal
Additional Information
Last Day of School
Mark your calendars! The last day of school for students PreK - 5 is Friday, June 21.
Grade 5 Families - Important Information!
For parents of current 5th grade students: It’s truly hard to believe that this amazing group of students is closing out their time here at Canal View! This week you should have received a letter from Cosgrove Middle School announcing this year’s parent/guardian information night, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 2 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Cosgrove. (This event is for parents/caregivers ONLY.)
Students will have multiple opportunities to visit Cosgrove, one being scheduled with their fifth grade class for Wednesday, May 10 and another on Tuesday, August 27 between 8 and 11 am for their own orientation. If you have any questions about this transition, please feel free to contact Cosgrove at 349-5301! As for our 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony, please mark your calendars for Thursday, June 20 at 2:00 pm!

Friday, April 19: Sensory Friendly Friday…Wear your most comfortable clothing.
NYS Assessments
Students in grades 3 – 5 completed the NYS ELA assessment this week, which took place during two sessions, on Wednesday and Thursday morning. While the topic of opting out increased significantly in the 24 hours before the test, I wanted to share that of the 212 students at Canal View in grades 3- 5, 164 participated in the test; a 77% participation rate.
I am grateful that I had a chance to speak about state assessments at a recent CVA meeting and during individual conversations with families. As always, thank you for the open dialogue!
I wanted to share with you that Canal View and Spencerport are held to a standard of a 95% participation rate. When we are unable to meet that standard, both our school and district are negatively impacted by the accountability measures. As I shared previously, the NYS tests provide invaluable insights into your child's overall academic progress and the effectiveness of our school's curriculum. By participating in these tests, your child not only contributes to their own educational journey but also helps us ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students.
Here are a few reasons why we encourage you to have your child participate in these NYS assessments:
- Insightful Feedback:
The test results, in conjunction with other assessment measures, provide detailed feedback on your child's strengths and growth areas so that we can tailor our teaching strategies to best meet the needs of each student.
- School Improvement:
Your child's participation helps us evaluate the effectiveness of our instructional programs and identify areas we can improve.
- Preparation for the future:
Participating in standardized tests helps prepare students for similar assessments they may encounter in the future, such as Regents exams and college entrance exams.
If you previously opted your child out of all state tests but would like to reconsider and have them engage in upcoming math (grades 3-5) or science (grade 5) state assessments, please contact Jeanie Conrad at 349-5709.
As always, please call me if you have any questions.
Red Wings Game
The 5th Grade Bands from Canal View, Munn, Taylor, and Bernabi are performing the Star-Spangled Banner at a Red Wings game on Saturday, May 4th at 1:05pm and we wanted to extend an invitation for anyone to join us!
The tickets are $10 each and can be purchased online through this link. May 4th - Red Wings Tickets
Traffic on Campus
With the construction work taking place both at Bernabi and across our main campus (including the high school’s East Parking Lot closing May 1), we are looking for your support in reducing traffic and congestion on campus. Specifically we are asking parents who drop off/pick up to have their children ride the bus. Riding the bus to and from school will maximize overall safety, reduce traffic on campus, and minimize bus delays that are resulting from the increased congestion. Thank you for considering!
PBJ Drive
It’s that time of year again to introduce our annual PBJ Drive, which will kick off next month and run the week of April 22 - 26. If you didn’t know this, donations from our community, coupled with just one other localized effort have resulted in over 9,000 jars of PBJ for our community food banks over the last 5 years alone! So, the next time you’re out grocery shopping, consider buying any/all of the following items, and be sure to send them into school with your kiddo(s) in April! All donated items will be brought to the Lockport PBJ group—check out the story here: Good Neighbors: Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive spreads love across WNY | wgrz.com
Our student leaders will be collecting:
-Peanut butter
-Alternative butters (ex: cashew butter, almond butter, sunflower butter)
-Jelly
-Nutella
-Fluff
Thank you in advance for your support!
Color Run - May 18!
Come join us for the Canal View Color Run/Walk to support Aubrie’s Army and the Willie Bee Foundation. The Willie Bee foundation helps support local families with children battling life-threatening illnesses and Aubrie’s Army supports a current Canal View student battling brain cancer.
The event is on Saturday, May 18th @ 10:30. All money raised will be donated. Registration forms were sent home last Friday. Forms must be submitted by Wednesday, April 24.
