Panther Post
April 23rd - 29th
Hello Lopez Families,
We have had a packed couple of weeks, but they have been great. I was not able to get it all into the last post and I didn't want the events to go unnoticed.
Congratulations to our golf team for having another successful year. Our 7th grade girls won 1st place at the district tournament for the third year in a row! Our 7th grade boys took third and our 8th grade boys won 1st for the second year in a row dominating the rest of the field, with Treniss Evans winning 1st overall. Good job golf team! 8th grade girls results still to come.
Two weeks ago our Superintendent, Dr. Gottardy, held a student luncheon to discuss everything from teaching strategies to technology in the classroom. We sent Jayden Robinson as our representative and he made us proud. (Picture below. You have to click to enlarge. Jayden is on the far left)
Our track and field team competed in the Meet of Champs and did very well with our girls winning the meet. Pictured below is our girls' 400m and 800m first place team holding the meet championship trophy. Way to go!
Our district held its annual Night Gallery showcasing all of the schools' artists. It is held at Blossom Stadium and if you have never been, make sure to go next year and take your family. The art in there is amazing and Lopez truly shines. Thank you Mrs. Volz and Mrs. Williamson for preparing our talented students. Pictured below is one of my favorites. Diego Rivera has agreed to let me display his "Made in Texas" piece in my office! I love it. And speaking of art, Kensington Preator won 2nd place in the San Antonio Bar Association's A.I.M for peace T-shirt design contest. Awesome!
The district held its annual Evening with Strings, hosting all the schools in the Reagan and Lee cluster. Each orchestra got to play and Lopez stole the show with their lighted bows and great sound. The finale was with all the of schools together. It was a great experience. (Picture below)
This past Thursday night we held our National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony. It is was nice to see all of those outstanding students. Congratulations to the following officers: President Allison Hall, Vice President Lance Kahl, Secretary Renzo Robles, Historian Emily Courand, and Treasurer Jordan Hester. We are very proud.
And on Friday, the district held our annual Special Olympics track meet at Heroes Stadium. It was a great event and our athletes from Lopez made us so proud!
8th grade parents - our 8th grade end-of-year party is coming up on May 30th. As a behavior incentive, we always have a standing rule that anyone placed in in-school suspension during the month of May cannot attend the 8th grade party. Please have a talk with your child about finishing the year on a positive note.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wernli

PARENTS OF 6TH GRADE STUDENTS
All 6th grade students are required to have Meningococcal and TdaP vaccines before entering 7th grade. As of April 3, over 200 of our 6th graders do not have these immunizations in our records. You may check Parent Portal or call us at 356-5003 if you are unsure if your student is missing these shots. It is very important to bring in your updated shot records to us in the clinic. You may scan/email the record or fax the record. Fax #210-481-4073. Email krackl@neisd.net
IMMUNIZATION CLINIC
On April 25 at Blossom Athletic Center, HEB and SAMHD will partner together to give immunizations to NEISD students. This will take place at the NEISD Career Expo. It’s a great opportunity to view all of NEISD’s special programs, as well as get your 6th grade child’s immunizations. Please bring your child’s immunization record with you to this event. A flyer with more details is in this newsletter. Don’t forget to send the updated record to us in the Lopez clinic!
PICK UP ALL MEDICATIONS
All student medications should be picked up by June 1. This includes all inhalers, Epipens, bottles of Advil, Tylenol, Benadryl, keychain medications, and any over the counter drugs. These medicines will be disposed of if not picked up, as the school won’t be air-conditioned when closed over the summer. If you cannot pick up medication by June 1, please call the school nurse at 210-356-5003 to make other arrangements.
Update Physician Orders
Orders for medications, including inhalers, Epipens, insulin, and all oral medications, should be updated over the summer. Medication forms are being mailed out to all students who currently have medicine in the clinic. Please schedule appointments over the summer so that you will not run out of time to have physicians to complete these medication requests. These forms are also available for downloading at http://www.neisd.net.
From the Library
Friday, April 21st - Tuesday, April 25th
7:45am - 4:00pm
Purchases greater than $20 will receive the Fiesta Medal below, while supplies last.
Service Hours
Lopez families,
Lopez Panthers should be tracking their service hours. The hours should be tracked in their Leader in Me binder on the service hour log page. They may also track their hours for the PVSA awards website. This consists of time they spend in any type of volunteer role - at school or on their own. This will help them reach their personal goal and will help Lopez complete their school-wide important goal of 10,000 service hours this year.
Instructions on how to enter your service hours can be found at: https://snapguide.com/guides/log-presidents-volunteer-service-award-hours/.
The site for actually putting in your hours is: http://presidentialserviceawards.gov.
Send us a picture of your child in his/her service role and we will display it on a celebrations wall! mvolz@neisd.net or ftobac@neisd.net
We can't wait to see the great ways our Lopez Panthers Serve!

Jon's Run
Jon Carl Stephenson died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on April 25, 2002, and is the inspiration for this benefit run. Although this event has Jon’s name, it honors all children whose lives ended too soon from any cause. Jon’s Run provides a time and place where families don’t have to be alone in their grief. Our Memorial Balloon Release is a beautiful tradition that offers healing and hope for families as they remember their children. The comfort and support they receive from being surrounded by others who have experienced a similar loss is a very important part of this event. Your donation and participation in Jon’s Run will help support families struggling with the loss of a child as well as help fund SIDS research and prevention.
The Jon’s Run organization thanks all those who have participated/donated for the last 15 years, and all those who continue to support this worthy cause. For more information, please visit our website, www.jonsrun.com.

Box Tops
Dear Lopez Families,
We are quickly nearing the end of the 2016-2017 school year! As we ready ourselves for summer break, it’s a great time to start an envelope in order to collect those Box Tops over the summer!! My name is Melanie Striffler and I’m excited to once again be our school’s Box Tops for Education™ Coordinator for next year.
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn cash for our school. Each one is worth 10¢ for our school! Just look for the pink Box Tops on hundreds of products. All you have to do is clip them and send them to school.
Last school year, we earned $200 for our school from Box Tops, and used the money to clean and refurbish our mascot, Prowler. This next school year, our goal is to earn $500.
For more information on Box Tops, including a list of participating products, go to BTFE.com. Be sure to sign up as a member (it’s free!) so you can check out our school’s earnings details and get access to coupons and bonus offers.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m here to help make our school’s Box Tops for Education™ program a huge success this year.
Thanks for your help!
