TKMB Characterization
By: Jordan Hall
Harper Lee uses characterization in the novel to illustrate the learning curve of Scout and Jem.
Lee uses each one of her characters that the kids learn a lesson from
Mrs. Dubose
- The courage of ending her life in the way she wanted, not to be addicted
"Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest women I ever knew" (Lee, 149).
Atticus
- Teaches the kids that courage is not always a man with a gun
- Be able to live with yourself first and then deal with others
- Hold your head high and be a gentleman
"but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience" (Lee,140).
