Mass Readings for August 16: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In Matthew's Gospel Reading, the idea of "great faith" is demonstrated and recognized by Jesus through the actions of the Canaanite woman.
In last weekend's Gospel describing the story of Jesus walking on water, He attributes Peter falling into the stormy lake when he and the disciples have little faith. Jesus often rebukes his disciples for having little faith since they often hesitate in the face of obstacles.
However, in this weekend's reading, great faith guides the woman to pursue. Before the obstacle, she acts with faith to engage with Jesus. He is the King of the Jews. She is a Gentile. She asks persistently but he is silent. She asks two more times, he says no. She doesn’t care. She just keeps on coming. Through her deep faith in the Lord, Jesus then heals her daughter.
As we reflect on our own actions in everyday instances, how would we describe our faith: little or great? How then would Jesus describe our faith?
