Freshmen Orientation!
If you'd like any of your classes to learn more about any of our library resources, just let us know, and we'll schedule a lesson for you.
Reading is FUN!damental
All About the Abes: the student program
- Designed to encourage high school students to read for pleasure and to become lifelong readers.
- Each year, a panel of high school librarians, teachers, public librarians and students determines the final master list of twenty nominated titles.
- Students who have read four or more titles by the March deadline are eligible to vote for their favorite.
- Read an Abe nominee, fill out the comment card, and your name is automatically entered in the weekly raffle. Prizes may be a $5.00 gift card to McDonald’s, Dunkin Doughnuts, or Subway.
- Read 4 or more books, and your name is entered in an even BIGGER end-of-the-program drawing.
- The freshman English class AND the sophomore English class that reads the most ABE books wins a breakfast or pizza party for the entire class!
- The BIG event: Students (along with a guest of their choice) who have read four or more books are invited to the March voting party to enjoy a deluxe breakfast while voting for the best ABE book!
How YOU can get involved, Teachers and Staff!
- Choose a book to sponsor (see the video above or grab a brochure in the mailroom or Media Center) for ideas about which one you'd like to read).
- Use your "What I'm Reading" poster (coming soon to a mailbox near you!) to advertise the book you've chosen.
- Encourage your students, either in your classes or in your extracurricular activities, to read the book along with you.
- Book the Media Center or Gwen for book talks, book club meetings or book completion parties.
- The teacher who captures the most attention (measured in number of readers) wins his or her OWN prize.*

taking charge of your life
Please help us keep our labs and laptops working as well as possible by reminding your students to treat the equipment with respect, keep their food and drink in their bags and leave the space better than they found it. Please remember, too, to fill out the sign-in sheets using students' first and last names. THANK YOU!
banned books week sept 27 - oct 3
This year, the week is focusing on books marketed specifically to teens because YA titles usually top the yearly lists of the most challenged books in the country, as you can see from the 2014 list*:
1) The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie
2) Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi
3) And Tango Makes Three, Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
4) The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison
5) It’s Perfectly Normal, by Robie Harris
6) Saga, by Brian Vaughan and Fiona Staples
7) The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
8) The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
9) A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard
10) Drama, by Raina Telgemeier
To celebrate our freedom to read, you can stage read-outs in your classrooms, have discussions about free speech and intellectual freedoms (especially in the age of social media), or invite Gwen to your class to talk about Banned Books Week.
*While many of these books remain on our shelves, one was removed by a district employee several years ago. Can you guess which one?
