KMS Up2Date
January 15, 2020
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. the district will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2021
Principal's Message
On Monday, January 18, 2021, schools are closed so that we may recognize the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's legacy encompasses many decisions and actions, but most importantly, his legacy is a continued progression of basic human rights that reach far beyond the civil rights movement. At KMS we teach our students that respect for one another is a key element of living together harmoniously in a community.
We've received a few phone calls this week regarding daily attendance. As communicated throughout this year, all students, both hybrid or virtual, must log in to daily homeroom by 8:30 am. We give the students a 5 minute window until 8:35 to complete this important task. If a student fails to log in to daily homeroom (period 1) they are marked absent.
If you receive an automated attendance call that your student is absent, or your child has missed or was late to homeroom, you may email KMSAttendance@bwrsd.org to update the attendance record.
Another issue with which we need your support is that some "at home" students will log into homeroom, but do not attend any classes (or few classes) during the school day. Attendance during all classes is expected and is important for success. We are working on running reports that will generate an automated call to parents if their student is marked present, but not in a particular class. We are continually looking at ways to increase communication during these difficult times. As you can imagine, it's next to impossible to foresee and solve issues that we have never dealt with in the past.
It's important for everyone to remember that the district's expectation is that students be "in school" from 8:30 - 3:00 every day unless notification to the office is made. The attendance clerk can be reached at 245-2010, ext. 2279 or KMSAttendance@bwrsd.org.
Families are encouraged to continue to monitor student progress in the parent portal. In addition to grades, families can monitor their student's attendance and conduct reports. It is recommended that you log into Aspen on a weekly basis. Second quarter closes on Friday, February 5 and I encourage all parents/guardians to reach out to their student's teachers with any questions.
A reminder that all students will be learning from home on Monday, January 25, as it is a state-wide professional development day. Students should use this time to complete virtual assignments that the faculty will prepare for them. Also, all students will receive notification from their teachers for two check-in times on that day.
Have a great weekend,

In the next few days families of 7th and 8th grade students who have qualified (with a 3.7 GPA or higher) will be notified via mail. Congratulations to those students who have qualified to apply to this prestigious organization. Your hard work and perseverance has paid off and we are so proud of you.
On Monday January 11, 2021 those students will receive an email invitation packet with directions for the application process. Completed applications are due by January 29, 2021 at 3:00pm.
The week of February 1, 2021 the Faculty Council will meet to review the applications and move forward with selecting new National Junior Honor Society members.
Students and families will be notified of acceptance by February 5, 2021 with a letter in the mail.
Invitations to the Virtual Zoom Induction will be emailed. The NJHS induction is scheduled for February 24, 2021 at 6:30pm.
This is a very exciting time for KMS students. If you are a 7th grader who does not have a GPA of 3.7 or higher please know that we will be reviewing your quarter 3 and quarter 4 grades for the next round of inductions in late spring. Qualified 6th graders will also be invited to apply in this next round. Keep up the great work KMS!
