Lily Bennet recognized as the Athlete of the Week
Each week, the WIAA and Gesa Credit Union recognize WIAA student-athletes for outstanding performances and impactful contributions in their communities. Please congratulate Lily Bennett for being the Athlete of the week for Cross Country!
Lily Bennett, senior captain of the Shelton High School cross country team, suffered a significant lower leg injury this past June. Unable to participate in any high-impact activities, Bennett was unable to run during the summer. But she didn't let that did not stop her from preparing for her final cross country season, as she transferred her training regiment to the elliptical. At the end of July, heading into August, she got cleared to run again -- only to face another injury less than two weeks later, once again prohibiting her from running. When cross country season began at the end of August, she was still not able to run at practice. After continuous cross training, Bennett got the clear to run again at the beginning of September. In her first race back, at the 2nd Fall Classic Invitational at Pacific Lutheran University's disc golf park, she finished in an official time of 20:26, setting a new personal record by almost 40 seconds. Throughout her injury and setbacks, Bennett worked hard to improve and overcome adversity. She is now ready to contribute for her team throughout the rest of the season.
