BLOW UP A BALLOON MAGIC TRICK
Simple Supplies: balloon (I like the 12-inch balloons best), water bottle (or soda bottle), vinegar, baking soda, 1-ply bathroom tissue or paper towel (we create this by tearing a paper towel in half), a pan to catch everything
Easy How-To: Set the bottle in the pan. If you haven't mixed vinegar and baking soda before, do this in the pan or in a separate bowl. Your children should know that vinegar and baking soda will react. Fill the bottle 1/3 - 1/2 full of vinegar. Place about 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the tissue and wrap it up. Ask what your children think will happen if you add the baking soda and place the balloon on top of the bottle. Squish the baking soda inside the bottle and quickly add the balloon. Watch the excitement!

MATH
- Math Exploration: Find a container like a water bottle with a thinner neck. Use small clothespins, cotton balls, or some other manipulatives to put into the bottle. Have your child predict how many will fit into the bottle. Then, have your child count them as they put them in the container. Talk about the opposites “in and out”.
SCIENCE
- Dancing Raisin Experiment -Science Exploration: Explore the opposites “up” and “down” with this Dancing Raisin experiment
Supplies:
· 1/4 Glass water
· 4 T. White Distilled Vinegar
· 3 t. Baking soda
· 5 Raisins
Fill a glass 1/4 of the way with water. A bigger glass works best. Add four tablespoons vinegar to the water.
Slowly add three teaspoons baking soda to the mixture. Have a towel close by in case it overflows! Drop the raisins into the glass one at a time. Wait. Wait. Wait. The raisins will eventually rise to the top and sink once they have enough bubbles on their surface to lift them to the top.
While I was expecting dramatic raisin *dancing*, this is a much slower-paced experiment! Also, I would suggest using white, distilled vinegar.
*Simple explanation: When you combine vinegar and baking soda, you create carbon dioxide (the gas found in soda pop). The bubbles collect on the surface of the raisins and lift them up so they float! Once they reach the surface, the bubbles escape. The raisins sink and the process begins again.
EXTRA FUN!
Make a rock sculpture, stack rocks & balancing them on top of each other or design rock faces and take photos to share.
·
Invite children to decorate a box to use as a pretend boat, don’t forget the sail & paddle.
