BEA Speech Team Begins,2016
By: Jayden E.
Blue Earth- According to the team’s coach, Michelle Ehlers, “Speech is a activity to build confidence and meet new friends.” Five members of the speech team had their first tournament of this season “on February 6, 2016,” at Worthington High School. They performed in Poetry, drama, creative expression, and some members earned awards and medals. There are just under 20 students on BEA’s team,, but only five 7-12th graders were able to attend the meet in Worthington due to other activities at the school that weekend. Ms. Ingrid Chrisman also coaches speech at BEA.
Speech offers 13 different categories, from drama to humor. For categories, Emma performs storytelling, Brady performs drama, Maygan performs creative expression and prose and Sophie performs does drama and poetry. Some of the older kids in speech have two different categories.
At a tournament, students will have 8-10 people in a room to compete, including a judge. The speakers that are awarded the lowest scores will advance to a final round to place and earn points for their team.
According to Michelle Ehlers, the speech team is off to a great start. The speech practices are on Mondays and Tuesdays and if students want to work on a little more they can meet with a coach any other day they would like. According to coach Michelle Ehlers Speech is a fun activity.Speech Fun

Mrs.Hanson's Kindergarten Class
By: Jayden E.
Blue Earth- The Blue Earth Area kindergarteners are having a great year says BEA Kindergarten teacher, Mrs.Hanson.
Students start their day off by having calendar math and choice time to follow. They then continue to having a morning meeting followed by language arts and then a break. Around 10:50 they go for lunch/recess. After lunch, they have quiet time and read a story. Community members also get involved in the classroom when parents and volunteers come in and read stories or make a craft with the students.
Students have math, science, social studies and health daily. The kindergarten class field trips include going to the fire station over Fire Prevention Week, visiting the Cedar Creek Apple Orchard, a trip to a dairy farm in the spring, Christmas caroling on main street in the winter and an adventure at Gartzke’s Greenhouse.
According to Mrs.Hanson her favorite part of teaching kindergarten is story time, teaching reading, and singing songs with the kids that go along with the units that are taught. “Children at this age need a lot of sensory activities, hands on learning, and concrete explanations of skills since they are at this stage of developmental learning. The more language experiences that can be incorporated at this level the better. In other words... don't talk about it…’show me,’” says Hanson.
