A Word from our Principal
Here we are mid May! The end is near everyone. Of course we have been so focused on the complete retooling of the education system during these COVID days, but now we need to start looking to the end of the school year and all that entails. Our hearts and minds are still committed to providing the Class of 2020 with a graduation to remember, and because of that we have officially moved graduation to July 31, 2020. Seniors will be finished with classes this Wednesday and then we will wait and hope for the County to determine it is safe for us to gather to celebrate. I know I am looking forward to seeing each student and congratulating them on their successes at AHS. On May 18 and 19 we will have a drive through event allowing seniors to turn in school owned items and to pick up their belongings--including the caps and gowns. Underclassmen will continue with their classwork through May 29. The first week in June we will close out their school year with an event allowing them to retrieve any items left in the building and then summer officially begins! Of course the changes are still here, summer school will be virtual. The silver lining is that there are more course offerings for kids to choose from, so they may be excited to continue their studies.
As we approach summer I do have to also shift my mind into the coming year. Online registration has already started. If you have students returning to AHS in the fall please fill that out as soon as possible. The more accurate the data, the better prepared we can be. Soon we will begin the process of welcoming the incoming freshmen, comforting their parents as they start this new chapter in life, and figuring out the long range effects of COVID on the school system. We are working diligently to keep moving Affton High School forward and to stay in communication with you.
Thank you as a community for your overall support of our school, as parents for being there to support us, and now as parent/educators to assist in the distance learning that is currently happening. We are strong together, we are learning together, and we will continue to do so!
Stay safe and Healthy,
Dr. Myers
Summer School 2020 Update
Summer School 8-12 grade
Having evaluated multiple programming options and timeframes, we have decided to move our summer school program entirely to online courses through Edgenuity this year. Edgenuity online classes are already commonly used with AHS students needing personalized learning opportunities so we know the program will allow us to offer rich educational experiences that will not only meet the academic needs of our students, but will also help protect the health and safety of both our students and staff.
This summer, in addition to offering a full library of online core classes for students who previously failed a semester class, we will also be offering an increased selection of proactive electives for students wanting to get ahead. In the past, these electives have been limited to PE, health, and personal finance. For summer 2020, students will have the ability to enroll in up to two courses out of twelve elective offerings to earn a total of 1 credit (one 0.5 credit course per two-week session)
Notifications of needed credit recovery and proactive elective sign-up information will be emailed home to students and families during the week of May 11-15. We appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding as we strive to develop educational opportunities that will ultimately be in the best interest of our students, safety for our staff, and overall well-being of the Affton community.
Graduation Rescheduled
We've shared plans with the Class of 2020, but want to update our community as well. Unfortunately, due to the Stay At Home Order still in place in St. Louis City and County, our original plans for graduation on Thursday, May 21 are canceled. However, we have a new date scheduled with Powell Hall on Friday, July 31.
Please know that we are committed to seeing our Seniors walk across a stage to receive their diplomas! Based on feedback from Seniors and their families, we have worked to come up with alternative plans to host the Class of 2020 graduation ceremony, depending on social/physical distancing restrictions and are working through many details. Graduation may look a little different than in the past, but you can bet we are going to celebrate our Seniors as soon as feasibly possible. We'll continue to share updates as they become available.
