Sunrise Family Updates
4.5.24
Hi Sunrise Families!
I hope this message finds you well! We are hopeful that Spring will really be on its way soon, with no more snow storms. We are getting geared up for the Forward Exam, which will begin next week!
Today we were so excited to welcome Sturgeon Bay High School band students and athletes who played for our students and spoke to them about test taking strategies they use. A big one shared was to get enough sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast the morning of testing. Thank you families for your help in this over the next two weeks, during testing (it is always important but these tests can take a lot our of kids).
We also recognized students who showed the most growth in Math and Reading on the STAR test for 3rd and 4th grade. For 5th grade, we recognized students who showed the most growth from Spring of their 3rd grade year to Spring of their 4th grade year. ALL of these students grew 95% or more compared to students who started at the same percentile across the nation (for the STAR test) and across Wisconsin (for the Forward Exam).
Ms. Londo sent the following letters home with students with testing schedule for the Forward Exam. In case you did not see them in your child's red folder, I have linked them here.
Enjoy the rest of the updates below and have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Katie Smullen
Sunrise Principal
Important Band Updates - 4th and 5th Grade Parents
- 4th graders will have the opportunity to see the band in action (see flyer below) and then families are invited to a parent meeting to learn more about choosing an instrument. This is an awesome program for students!
- 5th grade band families, please remind your child to load the bus promptly. Mr. Vanderloop has been getting off the bus to make sure all students are gathered. This is causing the entire bus to be late and so we have asked that he no longer do this. 5th graders are given ample time by their teachers to gather their materials to board the bus. If a student misses the bus, they will call their family immediately. Thank you for having a plan in place if this were to happen.
Important Message About Extra Milk at Lunch
Our Sunrise students are thirsty! Water is a good first choice for thirst and water is available right outside the cafeteria eating area. In school meals we provide one milk choice (8 ounces), at each meal. If a student would like to have a second milk container with a meal or a milk with a cold lunch, there is a $0.50 charge for each additional milk. Some students and families did not realize this. Additional milks require purchasing permissions enabled by parents as families are responsible for paying for the extra cost. If families want to adjust permissions or have questions they can email me (jspude@sturbay.k12.wi.us) or they can go into the food service section of PowerSchool and adjust settings for each student as they deem appropriate (this will need to be done each school year for each student, usually at school registration time). Thank you!
For Students who Walk or Ride their Bikes to School
Beginning next week, we will begin dismissing walkers and bike riders first (at 2:50 p.m.) instead of last (which has been closer to 2:57). We try to give space between the walkers and bikers and when the bus/car riders are dismissed to give them a clear path. With buses arriving later than 2:50 p.m., we would like to try this approach instead.

Summer School Registration
This is the last week to register for Summer School before it is open for students throughout Door County. We would like our Sturgeon Bay students to have their first choice in classes, so please register here: Summer School Registration.
