Sebastian River Times
September 2021
Dear SRMS Families,
As we continue to wrestle with the absences brought on by Covid and quarantines, please keep in mind that our Assistant Principal, Ms. Durwin, is our school's Instructional Advocate - this means that she is the contact person for parents when your child is out and you need academic assistance, but as always, the first contact should always be the classroom teachers.
Teachers will post work for students on Canvas, which is accessible through ClassLink, and stay in contact with parents and students through FOCUS messenger, and through email. Parents have the ability to set up observer accounts in Canvas - you can find the instructions here on the school district's website.
Ms. Durwin can be reached at kelly.durwin@indianriverschools.org or 564-5202.
Stay well,
Mr. Racine
Principal, SRMS

Start with Hello Week
from https://www.sandyhookpromiselearning.org/start-with-hello
We believe empathy and inclusiveness are critical to building safer schools and youth organizations. The Start With Hello program empowers students to recognize loneliness and social isolation in their peers, offering effective strategies to reach out and help, and ways they can grow an empathetic and inclusive community.
Start With Hello teaches students three steps:
- See Someone Alone
Learn about social isolation and loneliness as well as how to empathize with those who are feeling alone.
- Reach Out and Help
Learn strategies to connect with others and ways to alleviate anxiety about reaching out.
- Start with Hello
Apply strategies to include others, build lasting relationships and support a connected and inclusive community.
Our Start with Hello Week will include:
- Mix-n-Mingle Monday - students are encouraged to sit with someone they don't normally sit with at lunch.
- Team Time Tuesday - Wear your cowboy blue and orange
- Green Day Wednesday - Wear green to show unity with Start with Hello!
- Thoughftul Thursday - send someone a thoughtful, positive text or note
- New Friend Friday - Challenge yourself to say hello to 10 new people today
Homeless Education Program
Families that qualify under the homeless education program must complete the residency form every new school year, at enrollment, and when there is a change of address. If your family is one that qualifies under the homeless education program, please complete this form ASAP and return to the school.
You can also complete it online through the FOCUS parent portal - click on Forms and Student Residency Form.

This fundraiser benefits the IB programs at all 3 IB schools in our district: Liberty Magnet, Sebastian River Middle, and Sebastian River High School. If you would like information on becoming a sponsor, please contact Christine Sturgeon at 564-5210 or visit this link: https://osp.osmsinc.com/IndianRiverSchools (click on 6-8 and Sebastian River Middle)
School Bus Transportation
Please remind your students that they are expected to be respectful and follow directions while on board our buses. Students risk losing the privilege of ridership if they violate safety and security measures put in place by the driver.
ID Badges
This badge is used when students get on the bus, when they purchase lunch, check out library books, and as a security measure around campus throughout the day.
Replacements are available in the Guidance office for $5.
Band Fundraiser
The band program will be kicking off our annual fundraiser on Friday, September 10th. This is a catalog fundraiser, including an online store, which is a great option for friends and family who are not local to still help support the band. Parents, please be on the lookout for information from your child regarding this fundraiser. We would love for every band family to participate in supporting our young musicians.
Thank you for your support of the band program here at Sebastian River Middle School!

• Parents please familiarize yourself with the School District's Covid-19 Protocols. You can access this information from the school district’s website at www.indianriverschools.org Students with just one symptom will have to be sent home from school and may return with either a doctor’s note stating their return date, or a negative Covid-19 test result (Home tests are not allowed). If neither of these criteria are met the student will need to stay home for 10 days and return on the 11th day.
• Attention 6th grade parents: Health Screenings are October 19th. 6th grade students will have their hearing, vision, height and weight checked and screened for scoliosis. If you prefer to have your child opt out please check the box on the Health and Wellness Form or contact Mrs. Farina in the health room.
• If your child requires medication during the school day or has a medical condition, please contact Mrs. Farina for proper forms and procedures. Students are not allowed to carry medication on them while at school unless they have a signed Authorization to Carry form used for inhalers, diabetic supplies, epi-pens, or other emergency medications. All other medications must be stored in the health room and a signed permission slip, and doctor’s prescription is needed. This includes cough drops, Tylenol, ibuprofen, vitamins, etc. A doctor’s note is also required for excused from PE, crutches, wheelchairs, and shoes without a back strap.
• Every student needs to have a Health and Wellness form on file in the health room. Health and Wellness forms went home with the students the first week of school. Have your child return the completed Health and Wellness form to the health room.
• Your Health Assistant is Mrs. Jackie Farina. She can be reached at 564-5198 or jacquelyn.farina@indianriverschools.org. If you need to discuss your student's medical needs with Nurse Farina, please call or email to make an appointment. Walk-in meetings will not be allowed. You can also visit the District Website www.indianriverschools.org and click on departments then Health Services for more information and health forms.
Report Cards
Grades close for First Quarter Report Cards on October 12, and they will be published to the Parent Portal on October 15.
Library News
- The SRMS Media Center is the hub of our school. It is a full-service learning center where students and teachers gather to collaborate, research, create, and read!
- Our students will visit the library with their Reading or Critical Thinking classes every other week to learn more about what it means to be an IB student, learn research skills, create IB projects, and check out books.
We also offer flexible hours to students. We open at 7:30 a.m. daily; however, space is limited.
Students may check out up to 2 books at a time. If your child has any books still checked out from last school year, please send them back as soon as possible. If they are lost, please contact the media center.
We are very excited to welcome back our SRMS students to the 2021-2022 school year!
