Student Lucas Shadid Receives U.S. Figure Skating Award
The U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award recognizes the hard work of student athletes who have participated in figure skating throughout high school; awards are given at the Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze level based off a skater’s level of competitive achievement in high school. Selection for this award speaks to a skater’s continued commitment to succeeding in their athletic and academic endeavors.
We are pleased to announce that Lucas Shadid has been awarded the Platinum level Graduating Seniors Award.
Congratulations Lucas!

Resource for Orange County Families
We wanted to share a list of mental health, financial and food resources surrounding Orange County in case you or someone you know may need them. As a school, we would really like to provide options for families that are struggling in this area. Please let us know if you are in need of more assistance. We are here for you all during these times, and will get through this together.
You may find the list of resources here.
New Resource Site For All Parents
We worked together to create a resource site for our families and for parents who are now faced with homeschooling their children. Please share with anyone who you feel could benefit from the site!
Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon Theme for the 2020-2021 School Year is:
The Cold War
Exploring the history of the Cold War, the Space Race and Astronomy, Reading Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, and exploring the Art and Music of the Cold War Era are just some of the exciting themes discussed in the AG approved elective.
High School students of all abilities are needed to form a team that then compete at a regional level to then have the opportunity to move to the state competition in Sacramento in March.
A student does not need to be an expert in all ten areas, instead, we are looking for students of all academic abilities to create a well-rounded team. The Decathlon is about creating a team, and the coaches and teammates work together throughout the course.
Please pass on the informational Flyer and Interest Survey to all of your families.

Community Connections
We hope that you have taken advantage of the virtual workshops that the Community Connections team has been offering these past two months. They have been hearing some wonderful feedback and have listened! For the month of May, all the events have been placed on the Cabrillo Point Academy events calendar which are found on the Parent Resource website and the Cabrillo Point Academy website (they are the same calendar). Direct links are found here:
Cabrillo Point Academy website - event calendar
OC Parent Resource website - event page
First, filter for the Orange County only events. Then simply click on a virtual event you may be interested in and a pop-up will appear with a description of the event, supplies needed (if any), a RSVP link, and the teacher contact information (make sure your pop-up blocker is turned off for these websites). Click on the RSVP link to sign your child(ren) up for the workshop up until 2 hours before the start of the workshop. You will receive an email the day before or up until 2 hours before the start of the event with the Zoom link and password. For the safety of our families, we are asking that the camera is turned on, at least at the beginning while we are identifying that the attendees are all students.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the teacher in charge of the workshop or to Gina Garland, the Regional Community Coordinator: gina.garland@cabrillopointacademy.org.

Student Support

Reading videos focus on: beginning phonics, decoding, blending and Reading & Comprehension classes
Math Videos focus on: foundation skills, operations, multiplication and division, factors, multiples and fractions, expressions and algebra.
Office hours will be posted soon on the Intervention Website!
Special Education
Your student’s case manager will be contacting you if your child is due for an initial or triennial evaluation. Most of these assessments will not take place while schools are physically closed, as they require direct contact between students and staff. Instead, these assessments will occur once schools physically open. However, some types of speech assessments may be completed virtually. Your child’s case manager will contact you if your child is due for an assessment at this time.
If your child’s IEP includes extended school year (ESY), we will be offering ESY services this summer. Your child’s case manager will contact you in the next few weeks regarding your child’s service(s).

Enrichment
Enrichment Ordering System: Amazon Punchout
We hope you are enjoying the ease in creating orders that the Amazon punchout system provides!
Need help placing your A-Punchout order? Please feel free to review these videos (also located in the Video menu in the EOS).
Please remember to request no more than 5 items per A-Punchout order!
FAQs:
Q. I forgot to add an item to my punchout order. Can I add it to the EOS order?
We are unable to add items to existing EOS punchout orders. However, it’s easy to enter a new order request for additional items.
Q. I changed my mind about an item. Can I cancel it from my order? It hasn’t been processed, yet.
Items can be cancelled from punchout orders prior to processing them, but please be aware that removing items will void the 7-day price guarantee from Amazon.
Q. Am I able to purchase educational magazines through the punchout system?
Unfortunately, magazines have recurring billing associated with them and are not able to be purchased through the punchout system. It may be possible to purchase them directly from the publisher; please check with your HST to see if this might be possible.
Q. Can I purchase Kindle books through the punchout system?
Kindle books are not able to be purchased through the punchout system. However, they CAN be purchased with your child’s enrichment funds. To do so, please enter an order request for approved product vendor Kindle. Please enter only one book per order!

Homeschooling Advice
What to do when you don't know what to do
"I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been myself lately. Motivation to do anything has been hard to come by. I make plans and can’t follow through. Things have a way of getting to me.
Homeschooling and writing – two things that I truly enjoy – have all but fallen to the wayside.
See, I have always homeschooled my kids. I have even written books on homeschooling. But this uncertainty, this insecurity around us, is novel. All my energy, it seems, goes to just staying afloat mentally. Financially, we’re fine. My husband is an essential worker; these are no small blessings. And yet…
The current situation has turned me into part worry wart, part reactionary. It is only in this last week that I realized I cannot continue in this way. Who knows when this will end?
So here are five things I am choosing to do instead:"
