NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
September 27 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
We are in the October Count window. October Count calculates our student to teacher ratio and funding for the following year. Absences really affect our small school. Please be mindful of being at school every day during this important attendance time.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are just around the corner! Registration through HelpAtSchool.org will be open Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th. Please contact your child’s teacher or Sheila, our registrar, if you have any questions about signing up. We look forward to seeing you in October for these very important conversations about your child(ren)!
Lastly, the annual PTA Jog-a-Thon is next week. This is a very important fundraiser for our school as it provides funds for field trips, including outdoor education, for all of our students. Thanks for supporting your child in this way!
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Who's Who on the NES Staff?

A little about me. I am a Colorado native. I've always lived in Broomfield until now. I have always wanted to live in a small mountain town and my dream has come true....living in Nederland now. I love the smell of the pine needles and watching the water flow down the streams and rivers. I love listening to the sound of the wind blowing through all the beautiful trees in the Colorado mountains. I love to hike, ski and camp. Actually, I love just about anything I can do outdoors. This past summer I enjoyed dirt bike riding, camping and was lucky enough to enjoy swimming in the ocean. I enjoy practicing yoga and have already taken a few classes at the local yoga studio in tow. I am looking forward to Winter because I love snow! I enjoy skiing and can't wait to ski at Eldora, where I learned to ski 45 years ago!

I grew up in Virginia surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The west was calling my name and I moved to Boulder for college 16 years ago! I attended CU for undergrad and graduate school. I was a teacher for 10 incredible years in the St. Vrain Valley School District. I’ve taught grades Kindergarten-3rd. Recently, I went back to graduate school at UNC and received a Master’ Degree in Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling. I am thrilled to become a part of the NES community! Please stop by and say, “Hi!”
A little about my family:
I live in downtown Boulder with my boyfriend and our two adorable dogs (a 3-year-old malamute shepherd and a 13-year-old black lab mix). I was able to convince my mom to move to Boulder (It didn’t take much!) and she now lives several blocks away from me. My brothers still live on the east coast in Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville, VA. My father recently moved to Tucson, AZ. I have one nephew and one more on the way!

A little about me:
I grew up in Boulder and spent a lot of time in Nederland as a kid. After high school, I spent eight years traveling and finally moved back to Colorado to live in the mountains. I received my BA in Interdisciplinary Arts & Letters from Prescott College in Arizona, and have also been certified as a Wilderness First Responder and Emergency Medical Technician. I’ve been the Teen Center Director at TEENS, Inc. for two years, and am excited to be working implementing Restorative Practices with NES. I am passionate about working with youth and families, as well as our mountain community. I love stories, games & learning new things.
A little about my family:
My husband and I live in Gilpin County with our three dogs - Moonshine, Ramona & Merlin. We love hiking and spending time outdoors, as well as traveling and exploring art, photography, old books & new places.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Sept 23-27.2019)
All-day long, our Lizard Brain sends us messages about our emotional reaction to life's events. We often just hold in our feelings or act them out. Instead, students practiced owning and conveying what feelings they bring to each situation. Primary grades read How Are You Peeling? and expressed their emotions with vegetables or play dough. Upper grades played the How Would You Feel If...? card game and selected advanced emotion words to mindfully describe how they recently experienced happiness, anger, sadness, fear, and calm.
Students were encouraged to (1) PAUSE throughout the day, (2) NOTICE what they are feeling in their bodies, (3) Select descriptive emotion WORDS, and (4) SHARE with others: "I feel....." This brings our Wizard Brain online, soothes our emotional limbic system, and helps us select thoughtful choices for how to respond to the events of life. For more information about supporting your child's social-emotional intelligence, join us on October 9th for the next Mountain Strong Families presentation: How Connecting Deeply with Your Child Helps Them Learn.
