Virtual Field Trip in 6th Grade!
On March 27th, Mrs. Dollarton’s 6th grade class participated in a virtual field trip entitled, Egyptian Mummies, The Myth Unwrapped with the Milwaukee Public Museum. Connecting with their unit on Ancient Egypt, students were asked to answer four main questions:
1. Where in the world can we find Mummies?
2. Why mummify?
3. What is a mummy?
4. How did they mummify?
Students discovered that mummies are found around the world, mummified by man or nature, and that it was the Egyptians who helped make mummies famous.
The remainder of the program was driven through the eyes of the Egyptians. Students discovered amazing things about Egyptian people including their beliefs systems that influenced their rituals and daily lives.
One of the most memorable moments was the “How did they do it?” segment of the presentation. Together the students and the presenter went through the step-by-step process of mummification as they prepared a “dummy mummy” for organ removal, opening of the mouth ceremony, and the weighing of the heart ceremony to be able to enter the afterlife. Overall, students were engaged in this videoconference and were able to make meaningful connections to their unit on Ancient Egypt.
Special thanks to Central Bucks Technology Staff Developer, Jason Jaffe, and Social Studies Supervisor, Scott Berger, for their leadership in promoting this opportunity.
