Spring 2021 Registration Information
Registration for the Spring 2021 is right around the corner, believe it or not. As you may know, there have been recent changes to the registration timeline. Here what you need to know as you begin advising students on registration soon:
Advisors and Guides should plan to meet with their students beginning on or around November 2 as the schedule is finalized for their registration appointments. More information will be provided by the Registrar's or Academic Dean's Office soon.
Additionally, please view the newly updated Fall 2020 Advising Manual here. The Advising Manual provides overall guidance for advising students, and gives some specific resources and tools to use for advising that may be helpful with this upcoming registration cycle.
Reflection Seminar Updates
Reflection Seminars are off to a great (and virtual!) start! In RS1 students are participating in self-exploration and have created playlists of music that represent their life in some sections. One student, taught by Cara Arena, said that this is currently her favorite class!
RS2 and RS3 students are currently creating degree maps, which helps them to plan out the rest of their time at Guilford- so be prepared for students to contact you as their faculty advisor for any questions they have!
RS3 students are also continuing to refine and explore options for their final contribution, many of which are being affected by restrictions caused by COVID. This will certainly continue to be an exciting and challenging semester for the Reflection Seminars as we all navigate the virtual environment!
Fall Internship Registration Deadlines
Do you still have students searching for internship opportunities? Are they hoping to gain academic credit? There’s still time! The following deadlines for Internship Registration are as follows:
3 Credits = October 7th
1-2 Credits = November 4th
After your students have secured an internship opportunity, please collaborate with them to complete this form by the deadlines listed above. Reach out to Amber Slade (Career Guide, sladea@guilford.edu) for any questions you may have.
#QuaketheVote
Guilford College is a partner campus for National Voter Education Week, October 5-9, 2020. National Voter Education Week (NVEW) helps voters bridge the gap between registering to vote and actually casting a ballot. During this week of interactive education, voters have the opportunity to find their polling location, understand their ballot, make a plan to vote in person or remotely, and more. NVEW strives to help voters overcome common barriers to become confident voters and ambassadors of voting in their own communities for every election.
- Monday, October 5: Be #VoteReady. Verify your voter registration status by texting VOTEUNC to 56525. If you need to, update your registration or register!
- Tuesday, October 6: Be #MailReady. If you plan to vote by mail, either request your mail-in ballot or send it in! Be sure to follow all instructions on the form.
- Wednesday, October 7: Be #VotePlanReady. Don't just wing it - make a plan to vote! Voting rules vary across each state and community. You can always go directly to the source to learn more about the options in your state.
- Thursday, October 8: Be #BallotReady. Check out your ballot before you cast your vote! Your ballot isn’t a pop quiz – you can see exactly what’s going to be on your ballot ahead of time. Before you vote, it’s easy to read up about the candidates running for federal, state, and local office in your community. You can also learn about possible constitutional amendments, local referenda, and ballot initiatives. Get prepared ahead of time so you are confident when you cast your ballot!
- Friday, October 9: Be #WeReady2020. Level up your voting engagement! Elections are powered by people. Once you’re ready to vote, take it a step further: Get your friends and family ready to make their voices heard, become a poll worker, volunteer with Election Protection, and let folks in your network know you’re #VoteReady.
- Find a passive Voter Registration table. There are two on the first floor of King Hall (near King 108 and King 128) and one in front of OSLE in Founders Hall. Here, you'll find a sample form and instructions.
- Schedule a 15-minute appointment with Meagan McNeely at mcneelymr@guilford.edu.
- Stop at a table outside Founders when students are tabling.

Tiara (she/her/hers) joins Guided Discovery this year as one of our Integrated Advising Mentors (IAMs)!
Hometown and State:
Winston-Salem, NC
Class Year and Major(s)/Minor(s):
Sophomore, Criminal Justice
Why are you an IAM?
I wanted to become an IAM to be someone that the students can go to about educational questions and be able to make them feel comfortable with asking for help since I am also a student. I also wanted this position to get more involved in the Guilford community.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
I would buy my parents their dream home and pay for my brother’s college tuition(s).
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
I would name it “Behind the Queen”.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
My favorite 90’s jam(s) is Candy Rain by Soul For Real and un-break My Heart by Toni Braxton.
Guide Spotlight: Amy Holmes
Amy (she/her/hers) holds a PhD in psychology with a concentration in child and adolescent development from Northcentral University. Her MA from East Carolina University is in psychology with a focus on teaching psychology in higher education and her BS from the University of Mount Olive is also in psychology. Prior to working in higher education, Amy was an early childhood education and taught middle school special education. More recently, she taught at Davidson County Community College for seven years and spent four years at Catawba College. In her free time, she enjoys doing home renovations, traveling, playing with her dogs, and riding horses.
What is something you learned in the last week?
I tried to learn how to be a brick mason. I read some articles and used my knowledge of laying tile to add bricks to my front porch.
Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
Definitely Iceland. The geography is diverse, the Icelandic horses are beautiful, the wind is insane, and taking a shower in geothermal water is a smelly experience. I recommend snorkeling between tectonic plates in Silfra.
What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Putting sheets on the bed is the worst. I’ll do anything else to avoid it.
What is the one thing you cannot resist?
I have a very high level of self-control, but certain types of candy are my weakness (i.e. rock candy, cotton candy, Red Vines, Jaw Busters, Jelly Belly)
What’s the first concert you ever attended?
My first concert was the Lilith Fair. I was 14 and asked my dad to take me.
