Hickory Ridge Highlights
March 18, 2024
Dear Hickory Ridge Families,
Voting Day
Tomorrow Tuesday March 19th, voters will decide on Issue 6, a RENEWAL levy for the Brunswick City School District. This RENEWAL levy will not lead to an increase in taxes. Instead, it will continue the existing $3,200,000 levy that our community supported in 1994. Click here to learn more.
I Voted
The PTG is sponsoring an I VOTED voting day sticker competion for students. Collect your "I Voted" stickers for a chance to win a pizza party for your child's class. If you mailed in your ballot, no problem, just sign the back of your child's paper which are due on Wednesday, March 20th.
House Meeting
We will be having a house meeting on Friday, March 22nd. Students will receive their House Shirt on Wednesday and should wear them to school on Friday.
Report Cards
Report cards will be postedd on ProgressBook by the end of the school day on Wednesday, March 20th.
Summer Camps
Click here to check out some awesome Brunswick Athletic camps. Summer camps provide opportunities for kids to grow socially, cognitively, and physically while having fun.

Journey of a Blue Devil Competency
This month and next, our focus competency will be on Critical Thinking. Students will be discussing and talking about what this means and looks like for them in and out of the classroom. So far this year, students have learned about Empathy, Adaptability, and Responsibility. We will incorporate this skill in our house meetings coming up as well.
March Math Family Engagement
Our March Math calendar will be going home this week. Students who complete the activities and send it back will receive a treat at the beginning of April.

Counselor’s Corner -- March 2024
Happy Spring!! The weather is unpredictable right now, so please continue to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and if you need any hats, gloves, coats, etc., for them, please let me know. I have some things available at the school or resources that could possibly help as well.
The Second Step lessons I’ll be teaching in March will focus on Problem Solving. I will go into all classrooms and talk about the STEPs to problem solving (S=Say the problem without blame, T=Think of solutions that are safe and respectful, E=Explore consequences, P=Pick the best solution). Please reinforce these concepts at home with your child. The parent links are listed below on this newsletter. I will also be going into all 2nd grade classes for a second lesson this month to talk about good and bad touches and how students should handle these. A letter went home 2 weeks ago with all 2nd graders. Please contact me if you have any questions about this important lesson.
Students Can Avoid Common Problem-Solving Mistakes
Learning how to solve problems is as important in life as it is in the classroom. But there are some surefire ways not to solve a problem:
Deny or ignore it. Some kids hope that if they ignore a problem, it will go away. Usually, it gets worse. Teach your kids to face up to a problem early.
Get mad. Instead of writing their big paper, some kids spend their time being mad that they have to write it. The sooner your child gets over being mad, the more time she has to tackle the project.
Quit. There are usually many ways to solve a problem. Try one and stick with it.
Rely on luck. Thomas Jefferson said it best: “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”
Be afraid of making a mistake. If your child is afraid he/she might do something wrong, share this advice from Thomas Watson, who founded IBM: “Go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can, because remember that’s where you’ll find success.”
