"The idea for this Capstone Project came from a unit of study that is introduced to her students in the Spanish Cultural Topics Course as part of the Early College Experience program for UCONN. In this course, an in-depth study of the the historical perspectives and present day societal trends are studied in various Spanish-speaking countries through film. Argentina, the Last Dictatorship, ‘Los Desaparecidos”, the concept of the Collective Memory, along with the award winning film “La Historia Oficial” is included in the the unit of study that was developed as part of her Fulbright project. Her research and documentary is a result of a passion for learning, a desire to gain a better understanding of our the Spanish-speaking world, and the need to help students understand what it means to be global citizens in our shrinking world."
Jeanne Manfredi is the World Language Department Chair and a Spanish teacher at Lyme-Old Lyme High School, Regional School District 18. For the past 23 years she has lived in Southeastern Connecticut where she continues her pursuit of learning and experiencing the world through travel, focused field studies and academic courses around the world such as Europe, Sénégal, China, Tibet, Japan as well as organizing student-based community service trips to Spanish-speaking countries such as Peru, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Most recently, in August 2013, Jeanne took a leave of absence for the fall semester to study in Buenos Aires, Argentina as a Fulbright Distinguished Teacher. There she researched the impact that the last dictatorship had on the country and how the Collective Memory is so prevalent and alive in present day society. As part of her Capstone Project for Fulbright, Jeanne produced a three part video documenting the historical events seen through the media, the important places of memory within the city, and examples of how the Collective Memory is experienced in every day life in Buenos Aires.
