We started the week by taking our Reading Benchmark test, learning test-taking strategies, and reviewing our work from the beginning of the year to show what we know.
Next week, we will take our Math Benchmark test. We are busy preparing for that.
Third Grade
Third grade has been keeping busy! Mrs. Anderson’s class is studying early European explorers and learning about the history of our country. We have begun our unit on area and perimeter in math, and continue to practice our fact fluency for multiplication and division. In science we are studying energy sources, and in reading we are learning the different elements of figurative language.
Third grade has a field tip to the Orlando REP on February 14th. We are looking forward to seeing Anne of Green Gables!
Mrs . Sokoloff’s class is working very hard on multiplication and division fact fluency. We are reading Anne of Green Gables. We will be starting poetry and figurative language next week.
Third grade had a blast at our book tasting!

The students in Ms. Blaske’s science classes started their Totally Tourist Tour of the Solar System. Students are learning the length of time a day and year lasts on each planet, and how long a trip to each planet will last. Students are also researching two interesting facts to share with the class. Next week students will work in groups to make models of the solar system. The following website shows an accurate model of the solar system. You should explore it!

Calling All Scientist!!!!!!
The Curtis Rising Stars Science Challenge introduces young students to science competitions and helps them develop teamwork skills. The competition is open to students in Grades K–5, K-2 will be on February 1st and 3-5 on February 15th. The competition starts at 9 and ends around 2:30-3.
Students are first prepared through pre-activities and prompts with their class at school. The experience culminates in the day-long competition at the Orlando Science Center, when students put their STEM skills into practice.
Parents are to stay with their student at the Orlando Science Center during the competition. At the end of the competition, your family will have access to the Science Center for the rest of the day!

staff commendations/staff character of the month
Do you appreciate what staff members do for our students? Would you like to say THANK YOU to a staff member in our school?
We are giving you the best way to do it!
Recognize any staff member(s) by giving them commendations using the following link. These messages can mean the world for a staff member and will help increase motivation.
Ms. Hurley and Mr. Lawrence both go out of their way to make sure that the learning that happens in their classroom is engaging and memorable. They both also are innovative and take on additional challenges in order for their students to the best year possible. Their innovative and positive spirits rub off on all the rest of us and we appreciate their contributions to our school. Orlando Science Schools would like to recognize both of them as the Staff Character of the Month for the month of OCTOBER

Traveling Orca
Our traveling Orca has been slowly making his way around campus. I am hoping that he makes it back to Building 2 next week. Please check out his blog with your class. It is updated weekly. The kids in the club would love to see some comments added to the posts! Make sure you play the Kindness theme song! It’s a catchy little tune 😊
