Principal's message
Welcome back to Lum everyone!!! I must say, even though the 17-day break was relaxing and a very nice vacation with my family, I couldn’t wait to return! I missed these little Lum Bears and all of the amazing Lum staff. We have so much work left to do!
We have a couple of really important events coming up, and I hope you will attend at least one of them. On January 18th, we have a PTA meeting where we will be sharing the plans for the Lum construction project coming up in summer 2017. The plans currently include building 2 dedicated Science labs, one for K-2 and another for 3-5, here at Lum and creating a Kindergarten wing with a dedicated playground. Also at that same PTA meeting, we will be hearing from a Speech and Language Pathologist and author about how to help your children be better communicators in social situations.
On the following Wednesday, January 25th, we will be having a Parent Math University Night here at Lum starting at 6:00. Please see the flyer that is included in this Wednesday envelope. We will be having district math coaches lead the keynote, and our own teachers lead break out grade level sessions. I have convinced our teachers that parents want this kind of information, so that they can help their children do better. Please show up so they don’t have to teach to an empty room!
We have no school on Monday, Jan 16 for MLK day, and have an early dismissal on Friday, January 20th for teacher collaboration. The schedule for Jan 20 is TK 8:30 – 11:40, Kinder/5th 8:20 – 12:30.

Office News
The office staff would like to welcome all of our Lum families returning from Winter Break. Additionally, many thanks for your generous and thoughtful gifts; how fortunate we are to be part of such a wonderful and caring Lum community!
PTA NEWS
PTA Meeting: All are invited to the next PTA Meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 6:30 pm in the Multipurpose Room. It will be a very informative meeting for the entire Lum community. Plans for the upcoming construction at Lum will be presented by the architects and our Site Design Team. In addition, a special presentation by Alameda speech-language pathologist Susan Diamond. Susan will be discussing social communication at home, in school, and in the community. Current topics from her book will be shared including friendship, feelings, interacting with others, body language, manners, video games, and bullying. Social situations will be presented and solutions will be offered. Susan will also share her favorite rule, “Be Grateful for Who I Am”.
Feet First Fridays: It may be cold and wet some mornings, but our Feet First Fridays continue! Just bundle up and join your Lum pals walking/rolling/carpooling to school on Friday mornings. Fun hula hoop dance party at arrival before Morning Message with Principal Woodward.
Reflections Winners at the City Level: Congratulations to Dawit Cheng and Niranjana Kumar! Their artwork will be moving on to the PTA District program. We are very proud of their hard work and creativity!
Rainy Day Attire: Our PE teacher Ms. Faria-Poynter has some great suggestions to keep our Lum Bears dry and warm during the winter. Kids are still participating in PE (sometimes in the grass on Rittler Field) and in recess. Lots of opportunities to get wet and cold! Some great tips:
1. Pack an extra pair of socks in the backpack.
2. Warm waterproof outerwear with a hood.
3. Hats, gloves/mittens, scarves.
4. Layers, layers, layers!!
5th Annual Lum PTA Read-A-Thon: PTA is so excited for our Read-a-thon! Not only a fundraiser for our school, Read-a-thon is a great opportunity for our Lum Bears and their families to READ, READ, READ! From January 18 through February 1, students are encouraged to collect donations from family and friends, and to log their reading every day. Guest readers will visit classrooms to continue the reading fun. Furthermore, we will be collecting new and gently-used children’s books for the East Bay Children’s Book Project. Look for all the information and forms coming home on January 18. If you would like to help or be a guest reader, contact Kelly at kellyjoscott@hotmail.com.
Family Fun Night: Fun for all ages is guaranteed at our next Family Fun Night on Friday, January 27, 6-7:30 pm, in the Multipurpose Room. We will have lots of neat science activities to get us ready for Lum’s 2017 Science Fair. Bring dinner for the family or purchase pizza and baked goods sold by PTA. Popcorn and lemonade provided compliments of PTA. Families are asked to save and bring the following items needed for the activities: plastic bags, cardboard, empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, paper grocery bags.
Alameda Special Education Family Support Group: ASPED Family Support Group is hosting “Alameda Middle School Information Night: Making the Middle School Decision”. A panel of parents will share their experience of selecting and making the transition to middle school. Everyone is welcome. The meeting will be held on Thursday January 19, 6:30-8:30 pm, at Franklin Elementary. Free childcare provided.

2016-2017 Volunteer Requirements
We appreciate all our volunteers and what they do for Lum School. We thank you for your cooperation with AUSD Volunteer policies, as outlined below:
1. Volunteers must complete a volunteer agreement form each year and provide a copy of their driver’s license/passport to the office. (Volunteer agreement forms in office.)
2. Principal Woodward will perform a search of the Department of Justice website (Megan’s Law).
3. If you will be regularly volunteering in a classroom, or elsewhere at the school, the school will need a clear TB test result.
4. If you will be driving on any field trips, working unsupervised with students, or spending the night on overnight field trips, you must be fingerprinted. In addition, when driving, the required driver’s insurance coverage must be provided. (Insurance coverage forms in office.)
5. Fingerprinting instructions are outlined below, and fingerprints must be cleared at least a week prior to the field trip. This process may take up to a month, so start well in advance of the field trip:
a. Pick up a Livescan form and suggested Livescan locations list from the Lum office.
b. Arrange for fingerprinting with the Alameda Police Dept. or another facility on the locations list. Pay the required fees to the fingerprint facility.
c. Have fingerprints taken and return the Live Scan form to AUSD Human Resources.
d. Human Resources will inform the office when the prints have cleared.
e. Once fingerprints are taken, they are good for life!
We truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication shown from our Lum volunteers.
