October 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy Fall and THANK YOU to our EMS community for your partnership and support. We appreciate your attendance and collaboration at parent/teacher conferences last week. I also want to be sure and thank our booster group organizers, families who contributed, and Brookside church for generous donations of food and treats for teachers during conferences.
Important Dates:
October 17 - Booster Group meeting at EMS; 7:00
October 18 - Picture Retakes
October 20 - End of 1st Quarter
October 21 - No school for students; Teacher In-Service
October 24 - Beginning of 2nd Quarter
October 27 - Health Screenings
Notes and Reminders:
As the weather gets cooler, students need to be prepared to wait outside until they are allowed into the building. 6th graders are allowed in at 8:02. 7th and 8th graders are allowed in at 8:03. Students eating breakfast at school are allowed in starting at 7:40
Coats must be stored in lockers. Hats and hoods are not allowed to be worn during the school day.
If you’ve ordered EMS apparel, we anticipate distributing those items to students during lunch in early November.
Picture retake day is October 18th for students who were absent or need to retake. Retake pictures will arrive in approximately 2 weeks after the 18th. Orders can still be completed online for families who would like to order school pictures.
Please check PowerSchool and the homework calendar to help your student stay organized with homework assignments and to get all homework completed. Many students have missing work at this time. It is important that students get work caught up especially as we near the end of first quarter:
Attendance Policy
Students that arrive to school after 8:10am bell will be counted as tardy.
All students must be excused verbally by a parent or guardian.
**Please remember to email the office at ems@epsne.org or call the office at 402-289-2428 when reporting a student tardy or absent (not the teachers).
Students that are absent for professional appointments must either provide documentation from the appointment or call the school office to inform the school why the student will be (or is) tardy in order to have the tardy excused.
Excessive tardies may result in disciplinary action and contact from the administration.
Chromebooks
Please help your child develop a routine for charging Chromebooks each night. Too often students are coming to school without a a full charge on their device. We suggest that students and their families identify a safe place at home to plug in the Chromebooks overnight, every night. Thank you for working with us on this issue.
Annual student health screenings
The State of Nebraska requires that all 7th grade students as well as students new to the district be screened for height, weight, vision, hearing, and dental health. Parent volunteers are needed. The screening at Elkhorn Middle School will be on Thursday, October 27th 8:30 am-about 10:30 a.m. (Volunteers please arrive at 8:15 am to sign in and receive instruction.) Here is the Sign-up Genius link:

Also, please make sure that your student brushes their teeth that morning and that they wear their glasses or contacts that day if they have them. Thank you!
Band News
October 7th–8th Grade Band to EHS– On Friday, October 7th, the 8th Grade Band will go to EHS to observe and participate in a high school marching band rehearsal. This is always a really good experience for the students. It helps educate the 8th graders about what marching band is like at the high school level.
November 10th - Concert @ EMS – On Thursday, November 10th, all band students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will be performing their first concert of the year. The concert will take place in the EMS gym and will start at 7:00 PM. All students should arrive at EMS by 6:30 PM for warm-ups. Please come encourage your students and enjoy the concert. Concert attire will be expected for all students and will include black pants, black shoes and socks, and the EMS polo shirt (tucked in). The shirts will be distributed in early November.
December 3rd - 6th Grade Pep-Band @ EHS – On Saturday, December 3rd, the 6th Grade Band has been invited to perform with the EHS high school pep band at a varsity basketball game. More details will be sent home with the students as we get closer to the event, but students should plan to report to the EHS music rooms at an early afternoon time TBA. Students will be dismissed after about 1½ hours. Participating students will be admitted to the game free, but parents and siblings will need to pay normal admission or show their Elkhorn Activity Passes. Dress for this event will be jeans, tennis shoes, and the EMS polo shirts (tucked in). This is always a fun event for the students, so please put it on your calendar!
