Project CONTACT: Pima County Mobil Clinic
RUHS will be embarking upon a new collaboration between the Pima County Health Department (PCHD) and the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) to allow PCHD’s Project CONTACT mobile health clinic the opportunity to provide resources and services at all TUSD high school campuses. Plans are under way to make Project CONTACT available at Cholla High School in the Spring of 2019.
Project CONTACT is funded under the U.S. Federal Title X Act established in 1973, which was created to provide adolescents and adults access to reproductive health services. It has been providing services to Tucson youth since 1999. This program began to address sharp increases in teen pregnancy and STD rates in Pima County. The first partnership beginning with the Sunnyside Unified School District, and has expanded to include Tucson Unified School District, Chicanos Por La Causa, Ombudsman Charter HS, and COPE Behavioral Health Services, Inc.
Project CONTACT (Community Outreach Network Teaching Adolescents Contraceptive Techniques) is designed to provide reproductive health services and resources to adolescents who are at high-risk of pregnancy and/or STDs. Project CONTACT and PCHD clinic staff work with youth to improve their knowledge of birth control methods, including abstinence, and STD prevention.
Project CONTACT provides confidential teen services to hundreds of local teens through this program. The mobile clinic visits local High Schools weekly providing free:
- Comprehensive Reproductive Health Education & information
- Pregnancy testing, counseling and resources
- Abstinence & family planning counseling and education
- Birth Control Method resources and services
- Sexually transmitted infection (STI/STD) testing, prevention education, counseling, and treatment
- Emergency contraception
Students who use the services are counseled about different types of birth control, STD prevention, and the importance of maintaining boundaries and healthy relationships in their lives. Teens can ask questions of the staff. This service is provided to adolescents of reproductive age and in a completely confidential format to protect the student’s privacy.
Parents are not informed about the interactions by Project CONTACT staff. We strongly encourage all students we speak with, to talk with their parents or other adult mentor to involve them in making decisions about their sexual/reproductive health. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Noel Valle at noel.valle@pima.gov or visit our website.
