Current Event News Story - due date varies based on your sign up - 20 points
What do you hear when you turn on the TV, or listen to the radio? What do you see when you head to cnn.com? Where do you get your "news" of today? This assignment challenges you to dig through the headlines to find a "Current Event"...something from the last few months, about diversity and health, or health disparities.
What do news media outlets report on under-served communities, or social issues that impact health? This is NOT an academic journal article review (us academics report on this stuff all the time)...this is something that the NEWS media is sharing. What can you find? It is almost never front-page news, so get digging and find a newstory on health disparities and/or diversity and health.
Sign up in Blackboard to present a "video" current event or an "in-class" current event.

Film Review - Begin in class March 9 - each group assigned a specific time by Prof - 30 points
In small groups, you'll watch a film that highlights an under-served, or under-represented population in some way. This film is not necessarily about health, however it is meant to help increase your awareness of a particular population. With this newfound information, you will attempt to determine (with your own discussion, and research sources) how can this population be reached with a health intervention? Now that you know some of the challenges, and realities of a particular group, how would you attempt to implement a health intervention? This film, "Trouble The Water" is one of the films from the list. Check out the trailer below.

Service Learning - 4 Journal Entries, 20 hours of service, and 1 final presentation in class - Grand total 130 points
One of the most effective ways to learn, is to do. And then, after you've experienced a hands-on learning experience, you teach others. There are many benefits to completing service learning. Students engage with topics and communities discussed and researched in class, students meet community agencies and health professionals who are making a difference, and students build a portfolio of knowledge to help them further their careers. Nobody has time for service learning! Everyone is stretched to find time in their day. The syllabus will provide some scheduled dates/times where class will not formally meet, to help make time for service learning hours.
This is one of the most challenging assignments to schedule, but according to your peers, it is one of the most rewarding and impactful projects they've ever completed. Check out this awesome video from your classmates and their service learning experiences!
Journal Entries Due Feb 6, March 13, April 24, May 5. Final presentation dates to be assigned in second half of course.
