Eaglet Gazette
Enfield Head Start, Integrated Pre-K, PK STEAM Academy
February 4, 2022
Greeting SELC PK Families,
Welcome to February! We have quite a bit going on with weather, Groundhog's Day, and a few no school days around President's day. February is also Black History month and while we represent and honor diverse cultures throughout the year in many ways, this month, we will celebrate African Americans who have impacted us throughout history.
- As many of our classrooms kick-off a space themed play scenario, Mae Jemison, the first female, African American astronaut will be celebrated. Mae serves as an inspiration as she faced many challenges as she achieved her dream of becoming a scientist. Mae Among the Stars is linked below.
- Head Start classrooms are currently studying clothing. Jan Matzeliger, the inventor of many items which he did NOT receive credit for, will be celebrated for his invention. Jan's financial constraints and language barrier prevented him from receiving credit. He took classes, learned English, and patented the "shoe laster", a device which attached the soles of shoes to the top parts. This was done by hand by cobblers prior to his invention. Because of Jan, shoes became far more affordable and accessible. To learn more information about Jan, see the link below!
A FEW REMINDERS:

- In the event you need to contact the school with COVID related questions or information, please email Nurse Jen jmaier@enfieldschools.org and Jaclyn Valley at jvalley@enfieldschools.org to ensure that we are able to respond in a timely manner.
- Remember to dress your child in layers, as it is easier to remove clothing if they are warm at school.
- Please send your Eaglet with mittens/hats and a warm winter jacket as we try to get outside even if it is for a walk around the building.
