SUSIE SMITH, LINCOLN RN . . . on Eye Fatigue
Since the muscles around the eye can fatigue like any other muscle and we tend to blink less when we are reading a screen, staring at a screen for a long period of time without taking breaks can cause eye fatigue, blurry vision, and dry eyes. It is difficult to limit screen time during a pandemic, but here are some tips to minimize these problems:
Do your best to maintain balance between the digital and real world by encouraging your child to exercise for 60 minutes per day. In addition to being healthy for your child’s body overall, this gives your child’s eyes a chance to focus on other things than a screen.
Make sure your child gets enough sleep and avoids screens one hour before bedtime. Middle school students should sleep around 9 hours every night.
Encourage your child to take breaks. Set an alarm to follow the 20/20/20 rule. Look away from the screen every 20 minutes and focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Blink extra during breaks and consider using moisturizing eye drops or a humidifier.
Position the screen slightly below eye level and keep a distance of approximately 2 feet from desktop devices.
Use a larger font size to reduce strain.
Position computers so that light from windows or lamps don’t shine directly on the screen to prevent glare and decrease the brightness setting of the screen. Discuss with your optometrist if computer glasses would be recommended. These types of glasses have orange lenses that reduce glare or anti-reflective coating can be added to prescription glasses. Shades that attach to the screen are also an option.
Get regular vision screenings. Children who have blurry vision often do not communicate this to parents. Vision problems are often diagnosed during a routine eye exam.
