BSD WEEKLY
May 10, 2021
Discovery Class at Community School
Local school districts in partnership with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) are providing opportunities for students 16 years old or older to access free COVID-19 vaccinations at the Oregon Convention Center on Wednesdays in May and June.
District buses will be available for students who would like a ride to the Oregon Convention Center. High school students and their families should have received an email with a link to sign up for a vaccine appointment and transportation, if needed. If you didn’t receive an email, please contact your school’s front office.
ISB Ranked 21st Best High School Nationally
U.S. News and World Report has ranked the International School of Beaverton (ISB) 21st Best High School nationally and first within Oregon. Participation in the International Baccalaureate program at ISB is 100%. Take a look! Congratulations, ISB students and staff!
As a district, we’ve learned much over the past year. We also have been reminded of our commitment to standards-based learning and equity. In November, we suspended the use of the Failing (F) mark and instead gave Incomplete (I) and/or No Grade (N) marks. The use of the (I) and (N) marks do a much better job of accurately communicating evidence of a student’s demonstrated knowledge of course standards. Neither the (I) or the (N) mark award credit, but their use reinforces the message that we have not yet seen enough evidence to award credit, and “we’ll continue to work with you.”
We’re collecting feedback on continuing to use the Incomplete (I) and No Grade (N) marks instead of the Failing (F) mark for the foreseeable future. Students will still receive (A-D) marks.
If you are a student or parent/guardian of a student in grades 6-12, what are your thoughts? Please complete this survey by May 21. The survey is anonymous; no emails will be collected.

Mayor's Youth Advisory Board
BSD high school students are invited to apply to the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board (MYAB) for the 2021-2022 school year. MYAB’s goal is to serve the common good of the community and provide a voice for youth while organizing constructive community projects, strengthening relationships among all members of the community, promoting youth activism in governmental affairs and acting as a resource for any City organization upon request.
Applications will be open through May 21. Selected candidates will be notified by June 18. For more information and to apply, go to www.BeavertonOregon.gov/MYAB.
BSD Seasonal Summer Work Positions Now Open
The Beaverton School District is accepting applications for 31 Summer Helpers with the moving and paint crews in the Maintenance Department. If you are 16 or older, can lift more than 50 pounds, have a driver's license and can commit to being prompt for work each day, visit the Current Openings webpage to apply.
These are excellent summer jobs that pay well and keep your evenings and weekends open to hang out with friends.
Marathon Kids
This school year, Marathon Kids has gone virtual. Students and families can join their school’s virtual run clubs and log their progress on their online Marathon Kids account. Marathon Kids and Safe Routes to School sponsored Fall, Winter and Spring fun runs to encourage students to get out and get moving. So far, 9,250 BSD students at 35 schools have logged 5,148 total marathons, 2,697,686 total active minutes and a whopping 134,884 total miles! Way to go BSD!
Jacob and Celia Whitehead are a married couple who both teach PE in BSD — Jacob at Bonny Slope and Celia at Greenway. The Whiteheads have been coaching Marathon Kids run clubs for years, but they’ve had to operate their clubs differently since the pandemic. Take a look.
Take a look at how Bethany Elementary has been keeping students active through their work with Marathon Kids. Bethany ranks in the top 25 in the nation for their participation with the program. Hear from teachers and students about the impact Marathon Kids has on their school and community.
District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
