Mukilteo Elementary Falcon Spirit
Driving slowly in school parking lots is crucial for several reasons:
- Safety of Children: School parking lots are usually bustling with children, parents, and school staff during drop-off and pick-up times. Driving at slower speeds reduces the risk of accidents involving pedestrians, particularly children who may not always be paying attention or are unpredictable in their movements.
- Increased Reaction Time: Driving at slower speeds gives drivers more time to react to unexpected events, such as a child running out from between parked cars or a pedestrian suddenly stepping into the path of the vehicle. This increased reaction time can prevent accidents and injuries.
- Improved Visibility: Driving slowly allows for better visibility of surroundings, including other vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles in the parking lot. This is especially important in school parking lots where there may be limited visibility due to parked cars or other obstructions.
- Reduced Risk of Collisions: Slower speeds decrease the likelihood and severity of collisions. In the event of an accident, lower speeds result in less damage to vehicles and reduced risk of injury to pedestrians and occupants.
- Promotes Safe Driving Behavior: By driving slowly in school parking lots, drivers set a positive example of safe driving behavior for others, especially children who may be observing. It reinforces the importance of caution and attentiveness while driving in areas where pedestrians, particularly young ones, are present.
- Compliance with Traffic Regulations: Many school parking lots have posted speed limits that drivers are required to adhere to. Driving slowly ensures compliance with these regulations, avoiding potential fines or penalties for speeding.
Overall, driving slowly in school parking lots prioritizes the safety and well-being of children and other pedestrians, reduces the risk of accidents, and promotes a culture of responsible driving behavior.
Future Chefs
We’re thrilled to announce that our school will be part of this year’s Nutrition Service Future Chef Competition open to all 4th & 5th graders. The idea behind this event is to help educate and encourage kids in healthy eating habits. That’s why this year’s theme is “Healthy After School Snack.”
Timeline of the event:
- A flyer was sent home with the students describing the event. Included with this flyer will be a blank recipe sheet.
- Students who would like to participate need to fill out the recipe sheet and return it to the recipe collection box located in your main office by March 28th, 2024.
- A panel will evaluate the submissions and narrow the number of finalists to 2 students per school.
- Those finalists will be formally invited to the Culinary Competition held at Sno-Isle Skill Center on May 3rd, 2024 from 2:30 – 4:30.
- Parents will be invited to view and taste the final product during the judging portion of the event.
Students need to provide their own transportation to Sno-Isle Skill Center. Each student will have an adult mentor assigned to them to ensure safe food preparations are followed. All finalists will receive a framed certificate, recipe book of all finalist’s recipes and a bag full of other prizes. The 4 Grand Prize winners will also receive a new Bike & Helmet.
