GOSS VS. LOPEZ
Court Decision
Students Won!
Lopez and Crome joined other students and sued the Columbus Board of Education and the Columbus Public School System. Their intent was to get rid of an Ohio State law that allowed principals to suspend students without a hearing. The students claimed that the law violated the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The students won and the school system appealed to the U. S. Supreme Court.
With a 5-4 decision, the U. S. Supreme Court also ruled in favor of the students. The Court stated that students were citizens just like adults and were protected by the Due Process Clause at school just as it protects all citizens.
