Distance Learning Laptop Winners
Congratulations to 11 students who earned laptops from Hubbs Center for studying 150 hours on distance learning platforms outside of class. The students are Aung Sein, Dai Yangsenxay, Faduma Jama, Jaime Alvarado Pena, Mano Adan, Sahra Sahal, Arabu Berhe, Patience Ellis, Shaga Uka, Amina Sahal, and Saed Mohamud. Well done, students!
New Laptop Contest!
If you would like to win a laptop too, we have a contest for you! The new contest runs from March to May. If you study 100 hours on distance learning between March 1 and May 31, you will earn a refurbished laptop. The distance learning platforms include Edmentum, MobyMax, ReadTheory, ReadWorks, Vocab A-Z, CommonLit, Khan Academy, MyEnglishLab, BurlingtonEnglish, Northstar, TABE Academy, and USA Learns. Workplace Health & Safety Certificate class (formerly Building Maintenance)
In-Person Class: March 25 - June 6
Monday - Thursday: 12:00- 2:00
Course Description
This class prepares people for positions at a variety of worksites; construction, janitorial, hospitals, warehouse.
Learners will:
- Build vocabulary and skills related to workplace health and safety, customer service, and CPR.
- Earn OSHA 10 Certificate for Industrial Safety
- Students will have access to a Navigator who will help with job readiness, resume writing, job search, interviewing skills.
Requirements:
- ELL Learners Level B2 and higher (L1 learners, too!) L1 - Speaks English as their first language

Information Technology (IT) Tier 1 and Tier 2
IT Tier 1:
In-Person Class: March 25 - June 6
Monday - Thursday: 11:30am-1:30pm
Course Description:
This is one of two classes for students interested in going into the Information Technology (IT) field.
Introduction to IT will:
- Give students the opportunity to earn Northstar Digital Literacy certificates in Basic Computer, Email and Internet.
- Help students understand basics of social media, digital privacy and security and how to be a good digital citizen.
- Introduce students to IT careers.
- Give students vocabulary for hardware and software computer components.
Requirements: ELL B2 and above (L1 learners, too)

Teacher's Description of IT Tier 1 Class
IT Tier 2:
Online Google Meet: March 25 - June 6
Monday - Thursday: 10:00am-12:00pm
*Some days are in-person for skills training
Course Description:
This class will focus on Technical Support Fundamentals, a Coursera platform where students gain skills and knowledge of computer history and understand IT career pathways. Students will be able to:
- Name hardware, software and platform components.
- Understand different operating systems and how they interact.
- Understand concepts around Internet privacy and security for digital citizenship.
- They will learn how to perform basic computer troubleshooting with customer/computer users.
- They will focus on customer service skills and will job shadow current field technicians and help desk support.
Requirements: ELL C1 and above (L1 learners, too)

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit
Online Google Meet: April 15 - June 6
Tuesday and Thursday: 7:00-9:00pm
Course Description
This class provides students with the knowledge necessary to pass the Federal and State of Minnesota Commercial Drivers License Permit. Course content prepares students for the following:
- General knowledge test
- Air brake test
- Combination vehicle test
- Pre-trip vehicle inspection test
- Transporting passengers safety test
- School bus endorsement test
Requirements:
- 8 week commitment to the class
- One of the following Reading test scores:
- ELL C1 and higher
- TABE 11/12 M 442+
- 21 years of age
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record
- No DWI’s, no speeding tickets in the last five years
- No accidents in the last three years
- Able to sit for long periods of time
A student at a Careerforce computer, where it is possible to search for a job.
Paraeducator Classes
Paraeducator Daytime Class
Online with Google Meet: April 1 - June 6
Monday - Thursday: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Course Description:
This 10-12 week online class will help prepare you for the Paraeducator Certification Exam. The exam is needed if you do not have a two or four-year degree and would like to work in a school setting with Kindergarten to 12th grade students. The certification exam is an online multiple choice exam covering Reading, Writing and Math skills, including how to apply those skills in a classroom or school setting.
You will cover topics on learning styles, communication with staff, parents and students. Parent and student rights within the school setting and gain a better understanding of racial equity in the classroom. You will study techniques to help support and encourage good behavior in school. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to job shadow a current Educational Assistant (EA) or Teacher Assistant (TA) with St. Paul Public Schools. You will be able to see what the job is like and how EA or TA interacts with students, school staff or parents.
Requirements:
- TABE 11/12 M Reading score 468+
- TABE 11/12 M Math score 449+
- High School Diploma or GED
- Able to pass a background check to work with children

Teacher's Description of Paraeducator Class
Paraeducator Test Prep Class
Online with Google Meet: April 1 - June 6
Tuesday and Thursday: 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Course Description:
This 8-12 week online course is designed to support current educators to pass the Paraeducator exam on math, writing and reading knowledge and instruction. The course meets two nights a week through Google Meet. Students will be signed into Master Teacher account for Paraeducator and will work with licensed ABE teachers to build their academic skills.
Requirements:
- TABE 11/12 M Reading score 468+
- TABE 11/12 M Math score 449+
- High School Diploma or GED
- Able to pass a background check to work with children

A navigator will be at Hubbs for you to talk to and help you with things you need:
- Help with energy assistance (fill out forms)
- Help explain your case status for food stamps
- Questions with healthcare/childcare/financial assistance
- Assist with verification of applications and forms that may be missing. (landlord notes, bank info)
- Will help you fill out your forms
- Answer questions about what benefits you are eligible for
- Housing
- SNAP caseworker
- Resume support
- Job search support
- Will tell you what information you need to bring when you apply for benefits

Meet Chen, the evening Program Assistant!
Chen has been working here at the Hubbs Center for 3 months; getting students registered, advising them, and helping out where he can. Here are some fun facts about Chen!
Question: What are Chen’s favorite things about the Hubbs Center?
Answer: He loves the atmosphere here and how the people are diverse in their lifestyles and cultures. Chen loves meeting new people.
Question: What did he do before he came to Hubbs?
Answer: Chen was a teacher for 5 years, mainly teaching adults.
Question: Does Chen have any siblings?
Answer: Yes! He has three brothers and three sisters. That’s a pretty big family!
Question: Where was he born?
Answer: Chen was born in a small town in California. That’s all the way on the west coast of the U.S.!
Question: Has he traveled outside of the U.S.?
Answer: Yes! Chen has traveled to many places including Japan and Thailand! He loves going to new places and meeting new people but hates long plane rides.
Question: What does Chen like to do in his free time?
Answer: He likes going to comedy and music events, traveling, and meeting new people.
If you see Chen in the halls, go say “hi” and ask him about his experiences. Share your own experiences with him and get to know the staff here at the Hubbs Center!
