Reptile Review
January 2023
Principal Update
Dear Reptile Families,
I hope you each had a wonderful winter break. It's hard to believe we are half way through the year and kicking off 2023! Lots of great learning happened during the first semester. Before break, students completed their mid-year assessments. These scores are posted in your Parent Portal. Report cards will be released to the Parent Portal on Thursday, January 12th and will communicate your child's progress. We encourage you to schedule a conference with your child's teacher to discuss their first half of the year progress and make goals for the second half of the year.
Please continue to encourage your child to be reading at home. Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year. They will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers.
Have a wonderful week! Please reach out if you need anything.
Thank you,
Colleen Wilkinson
Principal

Art News
Art class has been a busy place for all students. During the month of December, primary and intermediate students used different types of clay to create winter like artwork. Modeling clay was given to all students to create a 3-D sculpture while using tools, poster board and crayons to create a background. Self-drying clay was used to create a snowman, artic animal or an imaginary creature; other materials were added to the artwork such as, tooth picks, cotton and much more. Lastly, Model Magic was also used while learning about mixing colors, such as orange, green and purple; students created a variety of subjects including, animals, jungles and cityscapes.
During the month of January students will be able to use watercolors to create a picture after the famous American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. Students will learn about her most important art accomplishments and how she became a well known artist.

We have 3 teams competing in the regional competition this year. This creative competition takes place the last weekend in February at TEWMS. This program is open to any student at NRES, new teams will be forming in the fall of 2023. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mrs. Carlson (llacycar@pasco.k12.fl.us).
