York School Honored with the Best Communities for Music Education Recognition
York Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education recognition from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.
"This is a wonderful recognition for York Central School and the community. We appreciate all of the hard work by our extraordinary music department staff, Mr. Vogel, Miss Aroune, Mrs. Daeffler, and Miss Dessert, and the dedication of our talented students. We are very proud of you all and this accomplishment," said Superintendent of Schools David Furletti.
To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education recognition, York School District provided data about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for the music program and community music-making programs. York School's data was verified and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Research into music education shows that children who participate in playing an instrument, reading music, and singing, have improved educational/cognitive and social skills. Make music!
We asked three York Seniors who are going to major in music in college, to tell us what the York School music program means to them. Listen to Adrienne, Grace and Indigo's interview below.

Local Business Leaders in the Classroom
Three local business leaders came into Mr. Conway's Junior English class to talk with students about employability skills and resume building.
York Central School alumnus Randy FitzSimmons from Power and Construction Group Inc., Cori Schneider from Milton CAT, and Clair Schroeder from Livingston Associates talked with students about a variety of skills including how participating in school sports and clubs helps develop good work habits.
The business leaders discussed the wide range of careers within the trades that offer excellent salary and benefit packages. They also gave examples of what they look for when reviewing applicants' resumes and talked about what students should do to prepare and present themselves for an in-person interview.
The students were very interested in the classroom discussion and they asked good questions at the end of the presentation.
Thank you to Mr. FitzSimmons, Ms. Schroeder, and Ms. Schneider for spending the morning in the classroom talking with our students.

Whoa! March Madness Strikes YCS!
On March 25 the middle/high school enjoyed participating in an 80s themed March Madness day that included swimming, roller skating or viewing a movie.
Remember going to a roller skating party back in the 80s? Middle/High School teacher Mrs. Dougal fondly remembered those fun days and she recreated it for the students- 2024 style!
Meanwhile, PE teacher Mrs. Alison Guesno arranged for the students to have free swim time in the pool. Over in Hilfiker auditorium, students enjoyed a movie with their classmates.
Third, fourth and fifth graders had an opportunity to roller skate too.
After school, the staff donned their skates and for a half hour they escaped to the 80s, big hair, rolled jeans, and scrunched socks!
It was a great day to be a York Golden Knight! Thank you to the organizers and supervisors of the events.
