Empowering Students Through Communications & Lifelong Learning
At South Elementary School, we are a learning community nurturing a culture to provide students the skills necessary to be active, productive, and responsible citizens while empowering students through communications.
WRTV & Scripps Howard Foundation, If You Give A Child A Book Event
"At WRTV, we believe giving children books can take them new places, open their imaginations, fuel big dreams, plant the seeds for future success and help break the cycle of poverty. Children who lack ongoing access to a rich selection of books spend far less time reading, resulting in lower reading proficiency and a struggle to complete high school and prepare for the world beyond. Unfortunately, many children in low-income neighborhoods lack access to the quality books they need to become competent readers. That’s where our annual “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign in partnership with the Scripps Howard Fund steps in."
Our book drive will provide FREE BOOKS to local kids and teachers at South Elementary through a Scholastic Book Fair in January. The kids will be able to choose their own books.
"Several higher education studies have found that when children select their own books, they are more likely to enjoy reading and score higher on comprehension tests. The Scripps Howard Fund’s partnership with Scholastic Books ensures children get to do just that. We’ll bring Scholastic Book Fairs to South Elementary School of Communications so students can select their own books to take home."

PLTW Third Grade Trip to Brooklyn STEM Lab
Project Lead the Way Opportunity for South Students
Dear Families,
As part of our District STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiative, the
MSD of Martinsville will implement a district wide learning experience for our K-4
students. During this two (2) day experience, students and teachers will visit the
Innovation Center at Brooklyn STEM Academy to participate in a grade specific,
hands-on, projected based learning opportunity. This program will introduce the
teachers and students to the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Launch curriculum.
PLTW Launch is an Evidence-based Learning platform for PreK-5 students. Through
PLTW Launch, students become hands-on problem solvers and learn to collaborate
with their fellow students.
The MSD of Martinsville is dedicated to the STEM education of all students and is proud to offer this unique opportunity to engage all students in this hands-on approach. Because this is a learning experience within the district, there will not be a special permission slip. If you choose to have your child NOT participate, please fill out the PLTW Opt Out Form, and know that your child will be responsible for the missed material on their own time.
No need to pack a sack lunch. As part of our STEM curriculum, Artie’s Cafe has
developed a special STEM integrated menu. The lunch price will be the same as it is at your child’s home school. Complete menu can be found at www.artiescafe.org and
clicking on “Menus”.
Thank you,
Sharon Goodin
