Friendship Family Newsletter
March 28, 2020
Hello to all our wonderful students and families!
We hope everyone is well and staying safe at home as much as possible. We miss our students greatly! This has been a challenge for all of us in every sense and we appreciate your patience and communication as we embark on our distance learning journey. The teachers have been very busy this past week planning engaging online learning activities for students which will start this Monday, March 30. They have worked hard to make it mirror the classroom experience as much as possible, recording videos and providing choices for activities that are similar to centers, while also trying to keep things simple for the adult helping the child with the learning.
If you haven't already, you will be getting an invite to join your child's teacher's Google Classroom for the week's lessons and activities. There is absolutely no pressure to get all of these activities done; it was designed to provide 3 hours per day of learning experiences and practice for students, but you can do more (with extension activities provided) or less. This all depends on your family's situation. Many of us are working from home while trying to care for and educate children, and sometimes caring for other family members. We understand these are challenging times, and our efforts are an attempt to provide some sense of normalcy and continued learning for our students. Please do not feel pressure to get these activities done. Many of the videos are designed to be watched without the need for an adult to be present, and the activities with careful thought to use basic materials that are in and around most homes. We hope your children enjoy "seeing" their teachers on Google Classroom this week!
If you did not receive this newsletter via email, please email Robin Campbell: rcampbell@thefriendshipschool.org.
Here is some information regarding our distance learning plan:
- New lessons will be posted in Google Classroom each week; "centers/choices" for literacy and math will be the same throughout the week.
- Each student has a unique four digit @thefriendshipschool.org email to login. Password for all is "homeschool." The teacher will share this information with you via email or Bloomz.
- Our essentials teachers will post lessons once per week in your child's Google Classroom! Get ready to say hi to Mr. Ali, Ms. Hubbard, Ms. Marien, Mrs. Freeman, and Mrs. M! :)
- Communication with teachers, including sharing of student work/photos should continue on Bloomz.
- Please find a social story from Conscious Discipline attached to this newsletter. It helps children understand why we are not able to go to school right now.
- We will be utilizing Epic quite often throughout each week; you have all received an invite to join "Mrs. Simmons's Class;" code is jdd1326. You'll need to access the invite from the email. If you did not receive an email, please email Robin Campbell (rcampbell@thefriendshipschool.org). As a school, you have already read 370 books; keep up the great reading!!!
- Many of you are asking about apps on the school provided iPads - everything your student will need can be accessed through safari/a web browser. We do not have paid subscriptions to anything. Teachers have created logins for ABC Mouse; please contact your child's teacher if you haven't been connected to this program.
- If you have difficulties with any of the school provided technology, please email our IT department at helpdesk@learn.k12.ct.us.
- If you were unable to pick up a fundations kit for your kindergartener (there might be some still outside the front door of the school), you can make many of these materials on your own. The paper will be available for printout on the first week of the Google Classroom posts, or you could make your own with plain paper by drawing the following: skyline, plane line, grass line, worm line. The paper is also attached to this newsletter.
- Case managers will be reaching out to students with special education and related services supports. If you have questions about this, please contact Dr. Meghan Pogonelski, special education supervisor (mpogonelski@learn.k12.ct.us).
- Please also see this video link from Norwich Youth & Family Services on helping to manage your family and e-learning during this challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iesavg7h8Ek
Please reach out to us or your child's teacher with any questions. Although learning and our connections are very different right now, we are happy to be working together in some sort of capacity to support your child's continued learning.
Remember to spend time outside, encourage play and exploration, and enjoy family time when you are able to. Thank you to all of our essential workers who continue to work outside the home every day, including those in the health care field who are on the front lines of this.
Be well,
Mrs. Simmons & Mrs. Rivera

¡Extrañamos mucho a nuestros estudiantes!

No tenemos suscripciones pagas a nada.

Cuidense mucho,
