Privacy and Security
PARENTS: This article and correlated video aim to touch on the Louisiana Guide to Digital Literacy "identify and explain the strategies for the safe and efficient use of computers (e.g., password, virus protection software, spam filters, and pop-up blockers)".
Cyber Bullying and Digital Drama
PARENTS: This article and video aim to educate the student on how to "Identify cyber-bullying and describe strategies to deal with such a situation" which is in correlation for the Louisiana Standard for Digital Literacy.
STUDENTS: NO ONE likes to be bullied! When you are on the play ground, you want other kids to be nice to you and play. The same idea is what we want to do when we are online. It is not fun to pick on others in person, behind their back, or even on the internet! What happens on the internet, STAYS on the internet... even when you think you have deleted it! We should be using our technology to learn, grown and help others... NOT to be bullies and tear them down! Be a positive friend online, instead of being mean to others and participating in hate-speech! You would not want your classmates and friends to be mean to you online! If you every come across someone being bullied online (target), you can: stand up for them (be an up stander), report the bully (offender)! Your goal as an awesome online user is to be a "de-escalator" when it comes to cyber bullying, you want to make the situation better, not worse! If you or someone you know is being bullied online, tell and adult or teacher! Located in the classroom will be an anonymous cyber bully box. This will be located on the outside of the class door and will be available for students to show cyber bullying. Students are asked to print out the evidence and turn it in, in the box or taken straight to the teacher.
Relationship and Communication
STUDENTS:
Miss Perot to friends: Sup guys!!! This is goin 2 b abt how 2 talk 2 ppl on the computer!
Miss Perot to students: Good evening kids! You are about to read about the best ways to talk to different groups of people using technology!
Can you see the difference? This is a perfect example of how to talk to different groups of people on the internet! Students, when you are taking part in ANYTHING with school, you are expected to use your best grammar and spelling. The skill of relationships and communication will help you when emailing teachers, other students, texting or snap chatting. We know the way we talk on instagram or musicly is NOT the same way we type or talk when we are talking to a teacher, parent or writing a paper or doing homework. It is very important to know when to use "ttyl" and "Thank you for your time, Katy Grey". When in chat rooms, instant messaging or texting, it is okay to use acronyms and emojis! However, when writing papers for school or doing anything outside of texting our buddies, we want to talk or type as proper as we can! In our classroom, it is okay to short hand notes and use abbreviations, but when we are talking test, we MUST use proper spelling and grammar. Using full words or shortened words are not the only problem! HOW you mean to say things will be different online than it is in person. When using online communication, tone of voice, hand gestures and facial expressions are not available. Always talk in person after online chatting to make sure you understood the other person the right way!
