Happy New Year! We are off to a great start this new year in both P.E. and fitness! During 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade fitness the students are participating in “step aerobics”. This is a great way to work on cardiovascular fitness, strength, and power moves, while hearing upbeat music and following choreography. Don’t worry! The coaches aren’t teaching the moves! We have a few great teachers on video that lead us through the routines. Adding our pedometers kicks it up a notch. During their 25-minute session the students get 1500-2500 steps.
Our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students are off on a great Adventure to Fitness with Mr. Marc. We love to take mini adventures around the world as we try to solve the mystery question, and even answer the question of the day. This time we are running from the “Yeti” as we hike Mt. Everest. There are lots of problems to solve as we try to reach the summit. We jump, climb, and run in “mega mode” to the end, but most importantly, we “NEVER STOP MOVING”. Feel free to check out some mini episodes on www.adventuretofitness.com for some much needed movement when your students are home.
P.E. is all about volleyball skills in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. We have been working on passing underhand (bump) and overhand (set), as well as learning to serve. Volleyball is a terrific skill sport that can be played for a lifetime. Learning the skills early can help to build confidence for future play. In addition, the skills help with hand-eye coordination. We have been so impressed with the students' skill level. It is so fun to watch as they learn the skill and put it into practice during a mini tournament. If you hear lots of cheering in the gym, you can bet someone has made a great play. Teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship are always a focus in our area!
While our “big kids” are learning the game of volleyball, our K-2 kiddos are developing skills that lend themselves to all sports. We are throwing and catching over a net to develop hand-eye coordination, throwing with accuracy, and tracking a moving object. We use soft foam balls to decrease the fear of catching. One of the favorite games of many of our K-2 students is called “shooting stars”. This is a lead up game to volleyball where students throw a ball over the net while trying to catch any ball that comes to their side, before it hits the ground. Points are scored for each successful catch. It is always great to see the look on their face when they catch that first one. Proper footwork to throw is encouraged as well as strategy during the game.
As you can see we are starting 2018 off with fun activities! Our next unit is table tennis. February will bring Heart Healthy month where we will take a trip around the circulatory system in our “Heart Adventure Course”. We will end the month of February with our Winter Olympics unit. We only do this unit every 4 years so we are excited to enjoy the Winter Olympics of 2018!
Wishing you and your family health and joy this new year!
