Mood, private, self-conscious... if this sounds like your middle grader, you're not alone. At this age, their bodies and emotions are changing rapidly. Here are some ways to cope.
Physical growth and worries about friends, sports, and schoolwork can cause moodiness. Let your child know you're available by simply saying, "I remember what it feels like to be a middle grader." Perhaps that will invite them to open up about what is bothering them.
As they mature, it is also natural for them to start "carving" out their own space. This requires a parent to yield some and provide space for them to have their private time.
Being part of a group can also help your child focus on their strengths, rather than their weaknesses, and feel more confident. Encourage them to participate in a number of sports, clubs, and extra-curricular activities Smokey Road offers.
